For the previous two playoffs, along with today's game against Houston, the Chiefs have 30 penalties for 243 yards and their opponents have 55 for 451 yards. In not one game has an opponent had less penalties than the Chiefs. Quite the statistical anomaly.

Week 5: Saints had 5, KC had 6. Week 3 or 4, they had the same number as their opponent, who I've forgotten who it was. I'm not checking the rest.

Your data is inaccurate.

Quite a statistic, indeed, especially since KC carries the always-good-for-3-penalties Jawaan Taylor.

When they can call this a PF on the defense, and they have the ability to pick up the flag, but they don't, there's really no point in playing the game at all. Eventually, some coach is going to snap and take his team off the field for a forfeit and the NFL will have reaped what it sowed.

Texans are the first team in NFL postseason history to outgain their opponent by 100 yards, have 0 turnovers, and lose.

Prior to the Texans, teams were 49-0 in such games.

First time seeing it. Total crap. That play & call is totally against what the "slide protection" was intended to do. It wasn't meant to allow QB's to dance around downfield and then drop at the last second.

Another reason why stats are meaningless & stupid to compare across eras of football. Elway could have played another 5 years in the league if he could have pulled shat like Mahomes did there.

The silver lining is a big time announcer like Troy Aikman having an immediate, visceral reaction to it and doubling-down on it a few minute later. Troy clearly is not a big fan of the way Mahomes games the system either, which is pretty refreshing in the era of Saint Mahomes.

Not the Chiefs fault; it's the refs fault. They get worse every year.

This. And maybe, just maybe the league understands the danger of this reality presents to their ratings and revenue. People were starting to curtain football viewing during the Brady years (similar ref treatment) until they stopped it and the Pats lost a couple. Maybe we'll get a fair AFC title game for once.

Doubt it. NFL believes there is big money in a Chiefs 3-peat, + they think everyone loves Mahomes/Kelce/Swift when in reality there are 31 sets of fans tired of the bs and favoritism

Per a Yahoo article today, Mahomes admitted to slowing up before going out of bounds and flailing his arms when pushed, "Yeah I probably shouldn't have done that." Then admitted to hitting the ground late on the unnecessary roughness call because he was about to get smoked.

Agree that slide protection was created for an intended purpose, but Mahomes is the QB who abuses the rule above all quarterbacks. Most of them start their slide well before any defensive contact appears to be imminent. Mahomes is looking to draw that contact because of how late he slides. He appears less concerned with where the first down marker is than how late he can start to slide. Tons of other guys know how to slide early and not risk unwanted contact, guys like Kyler Murray and Matthew Stafford come to mind. Plenty of other guys that I can think of rarely slide or they dive head first like Josh Allen and Baker Mayfield so they just have to be touched to be down. If the defenses want to make the quarterbacks more honest they're going to have to tee off on Mahomes like what happened to Trevor Lawrence this year. I guarantee if Mahomes sustains a concussion he's going to have to re-evaluate that nonsense he tries to pull. He's why 15 yard penalties need to be reviewed and confirmed.

The actual impact on the game, while gaining momentum, is not discussed enough. Given the fundamental truth that football is "a game of inches", the ability the QB has to cause even the slightest hesitation in a defender is massive in and of itself. Id argue that it is good for a yard or two when an inch would do. QB's armed with that knowledge, and a willingness to gain an advantage regardless of "fairness", will have a silver bullet . Take the officiating out of it all together and this is troubling.

yep, the fact that Mahomes admitted the flop...

means the Chiefs know there is a bias from the refs in their favor

Brady, Manning, Rothlisberger, Rodgers, and every other great QB did the same thing that Mahomes does, which is also what Josh Allen and Jalen Hurts do when they get touched.

IOW, the NFL protects their best player on their best teams, just like the NBA does.

The Chiefs are very beatable, even if they get calls, but the other teams, except for Buffalo this year, literally fell apart when the 4th quarter arrived. Buffalo decided to put the ball in their best player's hands on a key 4th down and he scored a TD on a keeper. My guess is that will happen again, He's due, like Manning was, and he's great, like Manning was. Brady eventually got beat by Peyton, and Josh Allen will do that this year,

Great QBs shouldn't need or want to be protected by the NFL, much less exploit rules to their favor like Mahomes does.

Worse, some fed-up defensive coach is eventually going to go off the reservation and give his frustrated players the go ahead to light up any QB's that pull this BS, regardless of consequences.

Someone could end up getting seriously hurt because of this nonsense thanks to KC.

It win't happen, but the simple fix is to get rid of the slide rule altogether. Protect QB's in the pocket all they want, but when they decide to cross the LOS they are treated like any other player with the ball. Let's see how good these QB's really are when they have to play like all those that came before the last decade or so. If you want to scramble around and/or run play like Allen, or else stay in the pocket of you need protection.
