You also can't be sure if it's a shank, a slight deflection, or blocked. Most guys aren't even looking at the punter

Because the rule as is is incoherent in the context of the rest of the rules of the game. Similar to the fumbling out of the end zone rule. It makes an exception for a particular scenario for no reason whatsoever that disproportionately rewards a team for not only not doing anything, but often for doing something bad.

lol how ****ty would it be to have a tipped punt that still went 30ish yards. But they don't know it was tipped so clear the ball but per this proposal it's a fumble so the kicking team falls on it and gets the ball. Or picks it up and runs for a TD
20 pts against one of the worst defenses in the NFL that's why they're bad, but again this is a win for me better
Upside for me, came into tonight down 82 points with Burrow, Lamb, and Jamar Chase left to play. 89 points tonight, with 45 from chase. Onto the next round.

The rule isn't incoherent at all. It's treated just like a punt. Pretty straightforward.
Your proposal is significantly more incoherent than the rule as it stands. See my point above. What happens if it's tipped and travels 40 yards still? It's a fumble and live ball?

Micah deserves better. Pretty rare to see a player so distraught after a loss on a team with such slim playoff hopes. The man just hates losing no matter the situation.
