The essence of the rule is that the defense did recover it because it went through "their" end zone.
It is definitely a harsh rule. I wouldn't be opposed to a rule modification if it was applicable at all levels of competition.

The defense's main objective is to keep the opponent out of their own end zone without possessing the ball. If you lose the ball and it goes into my end zone and then out of bounds, it now belongs to me. The defense did its job and should be rewarded with possession.

Would be a fun thread, but my personal "dumbest rule in football" is a ball carrier getting to shove his hand in a defenders face meanwhile that is a 15 yard penalty for anyone else on the field.

You're pairing the consumate professional with a guy who is there for name recognition. It's not that big of a deal, just you expect better from the network for such huge games.
