Why did the Lions send three different linemen over to the ref to report?

I think we know why. It was an attempt at subterfuge, and it backfired on the Lions. They know it, and they're pissed off about it.

I see what you're working on here but good luck getting people to buy in especially since McCarthy just rolled over and took the penalty at the time

Sorry. Just a crazy ending. Refs this year are as bad as 2012. Nothing will ever top the Hawks failedmary

As bad as the ending was with officiating, that's not even the issue with the game. The cowboys defense allowing Detroit to drive the length of the field with little time remaining is more of an issue.

Two weeks in a row they just gave up game winning drives. Is it scheme or conditioning?

^This.

The Lion sent three guys to try and throw off who was reporting. My guess is all 3 meant to get to the ref at the same time, Decker said "I'm reporting" but the ref probably thought 70 was talking since you know they have helmets and everything.

Like others have said, in the stadium seemed to report 70 has reported as an eligible receiver. Lions probably should have been listening.

Scheme. For some reason they thought their pass rush could get home before a veteran QB could find someone 10 - 15 yards downfield against a soft zone. That's not Jalen Hurts. That's a veteran who will pick that stuff apart. If you're gonna play that way, you have to bring an extra rusher from a random spot to create a negative play sometime during the sequence. We even let him give away first down 3 times on the drive, IIRC. Still, easy peasy.

But you can't prove that they would have run out the clock. There might have been some crazy play or a botched snap. Dallas didn't exactly make smart choices down the stretch with running the clock. The error on the conversion caused 1 team to lose when they definitely would have otherwise won.

You can't prove that either. 23 seconds is not improbable to get in fg range. Especially for a team with a timeout and a kicker with a cannon for a leg.

And again the lions should have just went to ot after the play that was screwed up by the refs for BOTH teams.. just stubbornness made them go for a very low percentage conversion chance.

Agree. Aubrey is a freak and can probably hit from 70. 23 seconds, a TO, and needing about 23-28 yards to get him in range if there was a touchback. Was absolutely possible.

As soon as they caught the 2 point play, I turned to my son and said, "12 yard pass, spike, 12 yard pass, TO. 68. Win."

How many players does it take for an eligible receiver to report to the referee?

The penalty on Hendershot was ridiculous. The Lion defender did a wild kick when he was trying to shed block. I guess the ref just saw a tripping motion and called it on Hendershot.

This could lead to a rule change about both teams wearing the same color helmet.

That tripping play is unbelievable.

The reffing has been bad all year and it was last night, but the Lions still deserve most of blame here. It's clear the ref THINKS 70 is checking in and it was clearly announced to the defense and 90,000 in the stadium, as well as everyone on the radio broadcast. And Dallas has confirmed they acknowledged it on defense and accounted for 70. It's just nonsense to claim that game was robbed from Detroit.

What the Lions were trying to do is prohibited by the NFL rulebook. So not only did the refs screw up the tripping penalty, this should have been a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty before the play was even run.

12-3-1(k)
ARTICLE 1. PROHIBITED ACTS. There shall be no unsportsmanlike conduct. This applies to any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship. Such acts specifically include, among others:

(k) Using entering substitutes, legally returning players, substitutes on sidelines, or withdrawn players to confuse opponents, including lingering by players leaving the field after being replaced by a substitute.

The point is simple - since Dallas was not told 68 was eligible, you cannot just assume he gets open anyway. That was an LT that ended up running a route. Of course they didn't account for him because they were never told he was eligible

Bingo. Amazing that everyone just assumes this was a successful 2pt if the "correct" player is announced.

I disagree with the 2nd down and 14 play call by Dallas. This is the second down after the tripping penalty. 2nd and 14 1:49 on the clock after Dak threw to the goal line and the play clock read 40. If they simply run the ball on second down they could have taken the clock down to 1:09. Egregious error in play calling by McCarthy. Run the damn ball to milk the clock.

Everyone is talking about the refs screwing up the 2 point conversion play.

If the tripping play is called the right way, the Cowboys run out the clock and the game is over. The 2 point play never happens.
