You don't have a winning record, you don't get in to the playoffs whether you win the division or not.
It's only happened 3 times in the past 40 years. And 2 of those teams won a playoff game.
It's not that big of a deal. The NFL has way more important issues/rule changes to address imo.

No reseeding after each round. Set up the bracket before playoffs and stick with it.

If there is a division winner with a less than .500 record they don't make the playoffs, Wildcard #1 takes the sub .500 division winner's #4 seed. The team with the next best record backfills the wildcard spot.

The rules are fine as is. If you win the division at 8-9 you still deserve to host the best wildcard. 2/3's of the time the team with the worst record won. I think the bye for the 1 seed will die first as soon as a 1 seed loses their first game due to the week off.
How about a rule that an undefeated ACC champ is automatic over a 1 loss big 12 team? Or a rule that a 1 loss sec team automatically makes the final 4 over a big 10 team that only played 5 games. In a Covid year of course. The Texas Aggies get a shot at the 2020 title and FSU gets to lose badly to washington
