Excellent tribute to the greatest RB of all time.

These were signed in 1990,
it wasn't too hard to tell then he was going to be something else

Campbell doesn't even crack the top 4. Smith, Payton, Sanders, Brown were all better.

What could Barry have done behind that line Emmitt had?

A line with exactly ONE member of the HOF?

Not saying they weren't good lines, but people seem to think they were all world so they can take credit away from Emmitt.

In their primes EVERYONE knew Barry was better. I realize some of you were 10 year olds living in Dallas at that time.

I've come around on this. I am a huge Cowboys fan, but thought Barry was probably the better player back then. I've watched a lot of highlights of both since then. Emmitt is probably the most underrated player of all time. He was damn near untackleable (is that a word?). He was quicker and faster than anybody gives him credit for. He had as good of vision as any RB I've seen. Always went the right way when he had a choice.

In short: I agree. Emmitt is the GOAT. Payton would be #2 for me. Barry can be #3.

I have never lived in Dallas, and I was between the ages of 22 and 34 during his career.

Barry was special and had some amazing runs. No doubt about it. He was a blast to watch.

Emmitt was the more complete running back, in my opinion. He wasn't as "electric" as Barry, but Emmitt was a better all-around running back. He caught the ball well out of the backfield, he blocked well, and he rushed for more yards.

If you want to say Emmitt's offensive line was so much better, put more of them into the Hall of Fame. You can't have it both ways.

I'll give you Brown and Payton. But Earl Campbell was the last great power back in NFL history.

Sanders was more dynamic, but smith was more complete. If your drafting again, I would pick smith over sanders.

Your Houston bias won't let you say Emmitt is better, LOL!! More yards, TDs, trophies, seasons, …

Jerome Bettis was a power back and greater than Campbell. Campbell is a top 10, give or take, RB of all time, but no higher.

Emmitt played the best for the longest and piled up the records accordingly. He played on the greatest team of the 1990s and deservedly won 3 Super Bowls for it. He's also a very good dancer.

But he never punished a defense like this man. Ther's a difference between great numbers and being the best. Earl was the embodiment of what you want in a running back. Just my opinion.

late to the party...

but it seems like Barry Sanders' career or reputation, etc.., has not aged well

in part because of the early retirement...and also due to the lack of playoff success

was Sanders better than LaDainian Tomlinson?

No one is better than Tomlinson- he got Fran the Bama job, who got the Aggie job by whipping Nick Sabans ass

Thus changing college football forever

very good documentary, all the Smith vs Sanders bull**** aside. Barry was unbelievable and a very unique (and refreshing) dude.

Never wanted the limelight, didn't care about records for the most part, didn't want awards (including the Heisman). He just wanted to play football and win as a team. The years playing for a hapless organization tore him down to where the game was no longer fun.

I loved how he never did a td dance or even celebrated - just handed the ball to the ref and jogged back to the bench. I think they failed to ask him, but I have to think he saw that from Earl. Although he said his Dad told him never to celebrate like a fool. His Dad was a piece of work - might have killed a lot of kid's ambitions, but Barry was different.

No disrespect intended to Emmitt Smith, because he was the best offensive player on a dynasty team and one of the greatest running backs who ever lived. He is an all-time great.

BUT, he played on a team that was loaded on both sides of the ball, which is a big reason for the rings and some of his personal success.

I can't speak for Jim Brown because he was way before my time. But, in my lifetime, Barry Sanders is the greatest who ever did it. Dude was a human cheat code, and the teams he played on were mostly garbage.

Sweetness would be number two. Emmitt third.

However, if we're being honest, if he had stayed healthy, Bo Jackson would probably top this list. Greatest athlete who ever lived.

Don't need documentaries to claim you're the best when you are, in fact, the best.
