Mahomes - 2nd overall pick?

I'm picking second in a 12 team standard league. QBs always go too early in my league. I suspect 4-5 will be gone by the end of rd 2.

I have the second overall pick, and I'm thinking about Mahomes, which is in major conflict with every ranking and mock draft out there.

To me it looks like he will/should/might score so many more points than anyone else you'd get at that position that it's worth taking him and then scrounging for an rb/wr later on. By the time it gets back to me at rd 2, I guarantee him, Allen, Hurts, Burrow, Herbert, and likely Lamar would all be gone.

Thoughts?

He will score a lot but so will all of the top qbs. So is he worth passing on all of the wr and rb talent that will be gone by your second pick? He won't score that many more points each week than QBs who won't even be drafted at all like stroud, Lance, jimmy g, Tua, cousins.

I would take Kelse or chase or ekeler or t hill over Mahomes. Get a qb in about round 6 and he might even outscore Mahomes.

Mahomes is projected to average 22 points per week basically the same as each of the top 5 qbs. The
12th ranked qb is projected to average 18 point per week and can be had in the 10th round. Or you can get 2
Late round QBs and play the best one each week.

Looks like you're going to get a great WR or RB with your second round pick on top of your first. Taking Mahomes at 2 overall in a 1QB league is malpractice.

so picks #2, #23, and #26

at #2 take CMC or Jefferson

then if 4 or 5 QB's go in round 2 like you suspect...

there will be a nice player waiting at #23 or #26 that should have gone earlier

maybe Adams, G.Wilson, ARSB, Waddle, Najee, et al

Draft RB/WR or possibly Andrews with your first 4 picks. If Herbert or Fields falls to you in round 5, maybe you could go QB there, but I would just keep stacking WRs and RBs and take like a Cousins or Goff matched with a high upside Anthony Richardson in like rounds 9 though 11 and I think your team ends up a lot better than with Mahomes in round 1.

Mahomes at 2 makes sense in a superflex league where QBs go quick anyone who is competitive will be starting two top-15 QBs every week. In any standard format don't draft a QB that high.

Yes that may be true, but definitely not in a 12 team standard as the OP described.

Also, I'll just add, don't use projections on players to draft.

Never pick a QB early

I took him 2 years ago with a high pick and it wasn't nearly as good a team as last year when I focused on RB/WR/TE. I did better last year taking Hurts and focusing on those positions. If you have pick 2 I'd take Jefferson, Chase, or McCaffrey. I personally wouldn't take a QB until at least the third round.
