We have a great draft ahead. We are in a position where taking the best available at most positions is a good pick. I honestly expect us to not reach and possibly trade down, which is good for depth. Our core is set, we need to build around.

We do need a 3-5 year receiver, which I assume will come through FA. Outside of Tank and Nico, we have nothing proven. CJ probably did some recruiting at the pro bowl, so we'll see.

Fully expect we'll invest a lot in DL. Not sure if JG is part of that.

The pick makes sense if Greenard walks in free agency. He had 12.5 sacks this year which is tied for 10th along with Montez Sweat. Here's the guys who finished in front of him: Justin Madabuike, Micah Parsons, Myles Garrett, Maxx Crosby, Danielle Hunter, Khalil Mack, Josh Allen, Trey Hendrickson, and TJ Watt. That's not inexpensive company to be in during a negotiation. FWIW he played 15 games and everyone in front of him played 16 or 17. The next guy on the list with 15 games or less is Kyle Van Noy (tied at 28th) with 9 sacks in 14 games. Other DE free agents of note this offseason are Josh Allen, Brian Burns, Chase Young, Danielle Hunter, and Bryce Huff. But Allen and Burns are likely getting franchise tags so a lot of the top guys will not be on the market, thus driving up the cost of a guy like Greenard.

The good news is that if we lose Greenard this is a deep draft at DE and we'd end up with a compensatory pick down the road. I think because of the depth at DE it would be smarter to look at DT if we concentrate on the defensive line. Way less depth at that position in this draft, the only guys I've seen consistently getting 1st round grades at DT in this draft are Jer'Zhan Newton (IL) and Byron Murphy II (TX).

While CB is deep this draft as well safety is the opposite. Most drafts don't even have a true safety with a first round grade unless you count Cooper DeJean and he's been all over the board in terms of draft position and a lot of guys seem to think he's a safety in the NFL rather than a corner.

My only gripes with his draft are he has NE passing on a QB at 3 and taking Marvin Harrison Jr and Brock Bowers lasting all the way to 15 with the Colts, which I don't see as remotely possible but it's a mock draft so critiquing it is a bit silly.

Pretty interesting that Houston is the secondary favorite for both Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs, third for Derrick Henry. I think that Barkley has the talent to be on par with McCaffrey but his situation with the Giants hasn't been the most conducive to the best possible results. Ryans and Slowik were both in SF when the trade for McCaffrey happened. Houston's run game definitely needs an improvement. Other guys out there will be Tony Pollard, Austin Ekeler, and D'Andre Swift. I just think with RB contracts in particular they need to be heavily incentive-based due to the injury concerns at the position.

I'm still apprehensive to think that Barkley or Jacobs even hit free agency. Due to the recent injuries to both Ekeler and JK Dobbins (from La Grange) I could see either of them on a prove-it type of deal.

I didn't realize until the other day that regardless of the cap space Houston has the most UFA's in the NFL at 30 so I don't know that Caserio takes a swing at a high-money RB like Barkley or Jacobs. I think Swift would be great in Slowik's system but he's not big enough to be an every down back, he'd be a tremendous piece in a rotation of backs though.

This doesn't look to be a great draft at the RB position. The only back I watched multiple games of this year is Blake Corum. While he's only 5'8" tall he also weighs 213 lbs and has 4.3 speed. I don't think they ran many pass plays to RBs at Michigan so no idea how good his hands are. I'm still really intrigued by Braelon Allen from Wisconsin because he's 6'2", weighs 245 lbs, and runs a 4.4. His biggest issue is fumbles though which will kill your ability to be on the field. In 3 years he has 3,366 yards averaging 5.9 yards/carry, 34 TDs, and 9 fumbles (4 last year.) I think it's worth a flyer to take a RB somewhere on day 3 but it's hard to project where these guys will go.

Fixing the OL/getting back the injured OL will help the running game. I know I'm in the minority but I have no interest in paying what it will take to get 30 year old Henry. Let Jerry Jones have him and think that's the ticket to the Super Bowl.

I do find Barkley intriguing as I could see him really thriving in this offense. No idea what it would take to sign him.

yes. OL first.

Mid level RB's all day and try to draft another one.

Not the time to overpay for offensive talent IMO.

I think OL philosophy and culture will be the biggest thing. They seemed to do okay pass blocking, but there's not much push on runs and often they're going backwards. Perhaps they should run more zone scheme as I don't think any of the guys on the OL are true road grader types.

Looking like it

OROY and DROY should give Nick Exec OTY and Demeco is the favorite for HC OTY

That's incredible given they went from a guy actively trying to get fired to hiring David Culley and then Lovie Smith.

Yep. Stefanski did a great job, but that defense was always going to be lights out. Throw in 3-4 transcendent games from old man Flacco and he won.

We beat that ass in the playoffs, though.

So happy for AJ80. Dude should have multiple rings, but got saddled with bad to mediocre WRs and still excelled.

Man the Texans swagger and cool factor is 100x where we were than this time last year.

The fact that he was left off 7 ballots when they voted for three spots is hard to believe. All he needed was one more 3rd place vote.

Ryans got robbed but on a night where Stroud wins OROY and Anderson wins DROY, Andre getting the gold jacket is the best news of the night. I was worried he might never get his due because of so many other things not related to him. What he was able to do on the field with lesser QBs than what so many other HOF WR's is remarkable. So happy for that man.

What a night for the Texans. I'm so happy for Andre, CJ, Will and Demeco, even though he only tied for first. The vote was taken before we crushed the Brownies in the playoffs. Demeco will win one soon enough. CJ was 9th in the league MVP vote. Another list I expect he will climb pretty fast.

Adding one top flight RB plus a veteran DL like Chris Jones or Justin M would be a great start to the off season. Grenard might be signed and I would go for Evans if he isn't franchise tagged by Tampa.

Should be a lot of fun and I expect a few prime time games vs Detroit, KC, Baltimore and Buffalo next year. Maybe TG day at Dallas?

The Texans would have had two HOFs tonight if they would have drafted Julius Peppers instead of that bum Carr. That still doesn't sit well with me.

How do you think Detroit feels about taking Charles Rogers at number 2 in 2003, followed by Andre Johnson at number 3? It stinks that Carr didn't pan out, but I get why they drafted him. It just really reinforces how lucky we are to have Stroud now and the team is doing right by him to build an environment for him to thrive in.

Going back through the 2003 draft and Andre is the second member to make the HOF, Troy Polamalu was the first. There will be more though, I'm guessing Jason Witten is the next to make it next from that class.

Aggies in that draft:
Rd 1/Pick 13 - Ty Warren (New England)
Rd 1/Pick 30 - Sammy Davis (San Diego)
Rd 2/Pick 45 - Bethel Johnson (New England)
Rd 2/Pick 62 - Terrence Kiel (San Diego)
Rd 3/Pick 87 - Taylor Whitley (Miami)
Rd 7/Pick 233 - Chance Pearce (Houston)

I imagine there are plenty of people that look at it as more that the Texans ruined David Carr than he is a bum. There's probably professional boxers that think he got hit way too many times.

Biggest question I have is how many players from those 2000-2003 Miami teams will make it? 6 or 7 by my count.

Andre Johnson, Frank Gore, Sean Taylor (RIP), Vince Wilfork, Ed Reed, Reggie Wayne, Devin Hester.

Those that aren't PFHOF that still on the teams...

Santana Moss, Clinton Portis, Jeremy Shockey, DJ Williams, Jonathan Vilma, Antrel Rolle.

Loaded.

I agree with this about the OL allowing Carr to get hit way too many times, making him a little gun shy. But the biggest mistake the Texans made with Carr was not bringing in the right veteran QB to groom Carr and show him how to be a pro. Tony Banks was not that guy. Face of the franchise QB was first one out the door everyday and you cannot have that with your starting QB.

A guy like Keenum is perfect as a backup QB for a youngster, especially since he'll be a coach one day if that's what he wants. He can speed up the learning curve for a rookie. It also appears there is quite a difference in work ethic from Carr and CJ.

https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/dalton-schultz-confident-he-can-find-common-ground-with-texans-on-new-deal

Schultz wants to come back and it makes a ton of sense to bring him back as well. He's arguably the best free agent TE out there and I'd rather lock him back up for a couple of more years rather than worry about drafting a guy to go along with Brevin Jordan this offseason. He'll need a pay bump from the $6.25MM last season I would think. He's 28 and while not elite, the team is better with him than without him. Gut feeling they could probably get him for 2 years for $8MM-$9MM per season, I think that makes sense for both sides especially if he wants to come back like he says.

I could be missing some but teams that likely need to think about a TE this offseason:
Panthers - you want Young or Stroud throwing to you?
Bengals - they have Burrow but are about to have a really tricky situation salary cap wise with their receiving corps.
Broncos - the Wilson and Payton partnership is about over and do you want to be there anyway?
Chargers - salary cap hell with multiple receivers making over $20MM/year.
Patriots - roll the dice with another rookie QB?
Commanders - see Patriots

I don't think Caserio has to make a compelling case for Schultz or the other way around, they should be able to get something done without a lot of back and forth.

Wasn't the result I hoped for last night, but it was a good game regardless. It got me thinking about what Houston needs to do to get more competitive with teams like those given how we went from really putting it on Cleveland in the wildcard round to not being competitive with Baltimore in the divisional round. We don't need to litigate Mahomes vs Purdy, but we have our QB so we don't need to get into that.

OL & DL - Both teams are heavily invested in their offensive and defensive lines. Battles begin in the trenches and both these teams were prepared on both sides of the ball. Proves you can always justify investments in either of those areas. We had good offensive line play this year but defensive line could use some improvement/depth.

RB - Neither team was able to establish the run last night because of the defensive line specifically. SF traded for CMC who is well paid and a former high draft pick, Pacheco is a late draft pick. Houston needs a better RB but don't need to overspend on the position.

WR - SF has a better WR corps but KC was able to make due with lesser talent. CMC led SF in receiving and Kelce led KC, that was a huge difference in that game. Kittle had 2 receptions for 4 yards.

Secondary - KC's db's really took away the SF weapons the majority of the game. Their pass defense to me was the difference that turned the game in KC's favor. While the dl was getting a lot of pressure IMO it was the secondary play that sealed it.

LB's - while both played well on run defense SF was not able to do anything with Kelce once he got going in the second half, especially on routes to the outside. The SF safeties weren't helping matters on that part of the game either IMO.

Being in the AFC where the QB talent is deeper than the NFC it reinforced to me where the team needs to improve. I would put a priority on the secondary and defensive line. There are other areas to target but I think those are the biggest areas of opportunity. Free agency I would put a priority on interior defensive line. This draft is pretty deep at both edge and corner. I hope they keep Greenard and just add some depth at edge. Unless there's a run on CB's before it gets to us I'd say focus on that in the first round. Also totally acceptable to invest in OL and protecting Stroud but I think there's going to be a run on the OL in the first round well before it gets to us.

life in the AFC has been tough since the Texans debuted in 2002

Peyton finally retired, and Brady moved to the NFC for his final years...

but then came Mahomes...and he's going to be a gigantic roadblock to the Super Bowl for another 10 years
