Slowik too according to Albert Breer. Sounds like the band is back together.

Wow, keeping Johnson and Bobby are huge wins going into CJ's second season. Now we need to upgrade the talent around him

That's an interesting trade speculation, Aaron Donald for our 1st and 3rd and 4th next year. I both love and hate this scenario, just because Donald has talked about retirement. What says the group on this completely hypothetical and unrealistic trade?

One advantage to spending money on elite guys in the last 3-4 years of their career is that the cap room would free up when it's time to sign the guys we have on rookie contracts to much larger deals

If the idea is to free up cap room in 4 years for CJ, etc., I'd first try to keep my draft picks and front load a free agent contract. Most would jump at the chance to sign a front loaded contract.

We think Christian Wilkins or Chris Jones would be game for 3 year contract? Or would they want more? We would still be fine to sign Will Anderson, stroud, and Dell even with one of them under contract at that point unless we dished out a ton of money the year before on Stingley and Christian Harris types. Pitre and Nico Collins would also come up before that.

I would say no to that trade because Houston is further away from contending than a player like Aaron Donald can make up for. That's the deal you pull the trigger on when your goal is Super Bowl or bust. Also, the Rams were a playoff team this season so they're not going to be giving up on next season. To me the key is to focus on free agents who don't have a ring yet who also aren't about to sign their second contract which is when they'll command the most money. Guys like Christian Wilkins or Leonard Williams. Chris Jones already has a ring, Madubuike is going to chase a huge contract because he's young and has the most negotiating power he'll have this offseason or be franchised.

Interesting, they have us resigning Shultz as the top FA tight end and also getting Chris Jones since KC won't be able to afford his Franchise Tag this year.

On that note, it looks like Baltimore will franchise tag Justin Madubuike. The other top target other than Jones is Wilkins, and the Dolphins are projected to be 55 million over the cap so it might be between those two.

We can upgrade over Schultz. He didn't impress me much this season.

Made a couple big catches but very inconsistent and missed a few games with injury.

After looking maybe they can't upgrade. I'd take Hunter Henry over Schultz but that's about it. Maybe Gerald Everett but after that the TE options are slim pickins.

I don't mind resigning Schultz if the money is right if the goal is to take a high end TE prospect in the draft.

Jones vs Wilkins is fun argument. While they are close in age, Jones is 29 and Wilkins is 28, Jones has been in the NFL since 2016 and Wilkins since 2019. Wilkins is finishing up his 5th year option so he's about to sign his second contract, same as Madubuike. Jones might command more on a per year basis but might not need the guarantees that Wilkins does since Jones isn't going for his second contract. Based on their ages either one of them is going to cost around $21MM/year would be my guess with two years of salary guaranteed. I could see Caserio getting Jones with 2 years of guaranteed salary, Wilkins would probably take closer to 3 years due to it being his second contract.

Dark horse: Javon Kinlaw (SF) he's 27 and Ryans will have history with him, could be value there since he's not going to be a top of the market guy but he's still young.

Outside of Brock Bowers, there really aren't any tight ends in the draft who are expected to be difference makers right away. I'm not crazy about Schultz, but it will probably make sense to resign him as long as the money isn't stupid. He is a decent possession receiver, although I really wish we could add a tight end who would make a difference in the run game.

Texans NEED to upgrade their running game, but that is easier said than done. They are committed to Laremy Tunsil, who doesn't do much in the run game. They're paying Tytus Howard who rotates between being injured or not very effective. Shaq Mason is ok. As for left guard and center, they've spent high picks on Kenyon Green and Juice Scruggs and need them to step up, but early results for both have been inconsistent at best. They need to sign some vets to compete on the interior OL...nobody who will break the bank as a guaranteed starter, but someone who will make their young linemen earn it.

Need a running back, too, but the draft is weak for running backs. Barkley likely to get franchised. Not crazy about Jacobs. Derrick Henry on a short deal might actually make a lot of sense.

I'll be disappointed if they don't sign a big free agent on the defensive side. I want Chris Jones. I know he is older and he is going to cost a lot, but he is one of the best players in the NFL and will immediately change your defense. Why not Patrick Queen, too? We actually can afford it. Adding both of those guys to your defense will likely turn your defense into an elite one as Anderson, Stingley and Harris continue to mature.

I think moving forward Scruggs and Patterson will be solid pieces at center and LG, depending on if Green ever comes back. If Howard can stay healthy and put in the time at RT we could see a large improvement next year. I like how they bolstered the o-line this year, we just got the short end of the stick on the injury bug across the line. So I wouldn't be apposed to the same approach next year.

I'm not too worried about running back, hopefully we can resign Singletary to a moderate RB contract, then pick up another journeyman veteran. While this offense can really go high octane with a top line RB (San Fran), it can also run at a high level with journeymen (look at Mostert in Miami).

I think we would be good handing out big money to Chris Jones on a 3 year deal, with an option on the 4th. He could be a great cornerstone during CJ's rookie window. While he could work, I don't think Queen is a good fit for the amount of money he would command. DeMeco's focus on top line talent will be the lines, which takes a ton of pressure off of positions like LBer. Look at Cashman last year.

From comments that Nic, DeMeco, and Texan pundits have said, I'm guessing top line talent acquisition priorities in both free agency and the draft will be like this:
Defense: D-Line -> -> -> -> Corner -> Safety -> LBer
Offense: O-Line -> -> -> WR -> -> TE -> RB

Good point on Kinlaw, I could see us picking him up also just because he's going to have a difficult market with his injury history.

But man, wouldn't a d-line of " Anderson Jr - Chris Jones - Rankins - Greenlaw " just be filthy

Gut feeling is they'll sign one big time free agent on defense, my guess would be Jones or Wilkins. I would love for them to resign Greenard, but he's going to be a coveted guy as well. Good news for Houston is there are a number of high end DE's currently set to become UFA's and that gives the team options. They don't just have to overpay Greenard to address it. Even Derek Barnett made big plays after being picked up, bring him back.

The draft is pretty deep at DE and CB, much less talent at DT and S. I've seen a lot of the mock drafts have the CB's slipping in favor of WR's, OL, and DE. There's going to be a lot of options where we draft.
Last year was a draft built on needs, this draft feels like even with what needs to be improved Caserio can look at value. Trade back if the deals are there.

I do think in addition to the free agents they need to get a deal done for Collins. He and Stroud just work together, no need to overthink it. Keep those guys together and don't let him reach free agency next offseason. They can add another guy but I think it's important to reward Collins, he's a number 1 WR, he earned it. I also think it sends a message to the guys that have been here and weathered the storm and come through the other side.
IrishAg

100% on getting Nico signed. 6-4 deep threats aren't very common in this league, we need to get something long term done ASAP.

Speaking of that, I realized that with Nico and Tank, we have deep threat/play makers at the slot and out wide, so that allows us a lot of flexibility in the draft to go get someone in the 3rd or 4th round again. We can look for someone to take that Robert Woods spot, but we don't need him to be a game changer with speed. We probably need someone who is more of a technician and route runner with decent size that can find the holes in the zone when Nico and Tank are covered. And those guys can usually be found in the middle rounds.

Some really nice prospects on this list. I'll admit it's a homer pick but I would love for Houston to draft Ainias Smith. He could do great things with a QB like Stroud. I also think he'd be a fit with with Ryans and Slowik.

https://texanswire.usatoday.com/lists/senior-bowl-players-whove-met-with-texans/

I was listening to PFF's podcast the other day and it doesn't sound like any of the QB's at the senior bowl is lighting the world on fire. I get that it's unfamiliar coaches, WR's, etc but how the QB's perform really informs how the offense and defense on the field is graded.

Of note Toledo CB Quinyon Mitchell has definitely had some buzz around him, he's definitely in the mix for the first round. Michigan WR Roman Wilson also sounds like a guy to keep an eye on as well.
IrishAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I listened to that same podcast and got the same impressions on the QBs.

Looking through the list I didn't realize Darius Robinson, DE out of Missouri, was that big (6-5, 290). That guy seems like a prototype DE for this defense.

Apparently there's a reason he brought up Quinyon Mitchell from Toledo. Supposedly he had the best week of anyone at the senior bowl. Biggest question was how would his game translate against better competition and the answer was not an issue at all, as he dominated 1:1 drills. Might have moved his way up to CB1 in the draft depending on his combine times.

Free agent RBs available this year include:
Derek Henry, Shaquan Barkley, Josh Jacobs, Austin Ekeler and D Swift of Phily.

The Texans are very likely to add one of these plus resign Singletary.

Mike Evans could be signed unless TB signs Mayfield and gives Mike a franchise tag. I think TB will find a way to keep him. Higgins could be traded for or a guy like Gabe Brown could be signed but with Tank Dell coming back I think WR will be addressed in the draft.

Chris Jones, Justin Madebuike or other similar veteran will likely be signed at DT. I could see the Texans possibly adding Edgerin Cooper at pick 23, and/or Anias Smith in about round 3, with Smith playing a role similar to Deebo's role at SF.

I think Henry plus keeping Singletary is the best solution. He doesn't get hurt and rarely gets shut down. He was 2nd in NFL in rushing this year.
