so there's a strong chance the Texans won't take a QB at #2 or #12

The Texans aren't making the playoffs this year so they should be looking at this as a "2 more years rebuild" and not worry about next year's record. However, you have a new coaching staff that wants to get off to a strong start and ownership that's tired of being treated around Houston as a joke.

Trade back or take a defensive player at 2 and then trade up from 12 for Richardson or wait until next year for your long term QB. Of the 3 QBs available, Levis and Stroud will likely be busts, imo. Richardson has a ton of upside and would be worth the gamble.

Fans will scream for them to get a QB now but at this point they need to focus more on talent acquisition across the board. Next year will almost certainly be a better draft year for QBs

I am all for them NOT drafting a QB if they don't feel like the QB's in the first round of this draft aren't worthy of those picks and that money…why waste a pick on QB you aren't sold on in the first round?

Yeah that SF model of building a strong defense and good skilled position players and then using Mr Irrelevant at QB to almost make the Super Bowl will never work. Wait don't the Texans have the last pick this year? Max Dugan, stetson Bennett come on down.

one issue...let's say DeMeco is as good as advertised...and gets 6 or 7 wins out of next year's team

the Texans won't have a top 5 pick. Might barely be in the top 10

I think we can make the playoffs this year. A few things would need to fall in our favor but it's not a slam dunk bad year. Jacksonville is the best team, we could split. Indy we can take two from. Tennessee does some real head scratching things and might go into rebuild with Tannehill getting older and trade Henry on the last year of his deal - depends what weeks we get scheduled with them. Favorable schedule playing a few other last place teams from last year.

I would not at all be surprised if we roll with Mills, Keenum. People will be pissed but if we don't believe in anyone available in the draft, Mills is a known quantity and we go ahead and stack talent in other places to make a move next year.

Yes, but you will have draft capital to move if you have a willing partner to trade up.

The Browns pick might just end up in the top 10.

Never forget they are still the Browns.

Definitely true, but remember Deshaun was taken #12 and the Texans traded up to get him there. We should have plenty of draft picks next year to trade up if needed and so I'd rather not throw any away on longshots this year.

One thing I don't want to see us do is trade up from 12 for a QB. If we like a QB enough to want to spend extra draft capitol on, then we should just draft him at 2. I'm no scout, but I'd pass at QB at 2 unless Young is there. Now if one is there at 12, I'd be fine taking him, especially Richardson as I feel he has that upside potential.

Whether they take one at 2, 12, 33, middle rounds, trade for one, whatever...They can't start next season with the QBs they have.

IMO that's one thing that isn't an option.

What if we did end up getting Mac Jones?

Trey Lance does nothing for me but Mac Jones with a proper offensive coordinator and some weapons? That's an extremely intriguing prospect.

Chalk me up as thinking that none of the QBs in this draft will amount to anything in the AFC. This conference is way too stacked with QB talent.

What does talent on other teams have to do with how well a QB performs on this team?

And while you may be right that none of them pan out I would it's rare that an entire class of QBs flop, but identifying which one or ones won't is the tough part.

Exactly. No half measures at QB if you are using a top 5 pick. You better be sold on that guy, and based off of the reporting, it appears we are not sold on Stroud/Levis, and AR was never really an option.

I'm not sure if Mac Jones/Trey Lance will be the guy, but they likely cost less and you will feel comfortable moving on faster.

Levis and Richardson lines are horribly off.

Edit: now I see the difference. "Accurate throw %," not completion %. How does that get measured? Levis completed over 65% yet his accurate throw % is well below that?

Everything I've read or heard seems to indicate that next year's QB class will be deeper, as well as more talented at the top, with Williams and Maye both more highly regarded than any QB in this year's draft. Why not wait?

Maybe even move down and pick up more draft assets for next year, instead of worrying about losing enough to end up back in the top 5. It's not like they are expected to compete this year, so why do they have to snag the "franchise QB" in this draft, especially if they're not high on anyone they'll be able to acquire? They have enough other glaring needs.

Just remember Mahomes, Watson, Josh Allen, Herbert, Hurts, Rodgers, wilson, Cousins, Dak - None picked 1 or 2 in the draft. Even with Mills and the talent additions this team will likely be 6-8 wins with the weak schedule and terrible division.

I think this is where the Demeco/Caserio relationship gets strained.

Demeco has time to wait. They aren't canning him after 1 year.

Caserio doesn't. He doesn't get this right he may not be here next year. He needs to get a QB now.
AG@RICE

Caserio doesn't necessarily need a QB, he just needs to win. I actually think adding Anderson or Carter would make the team more competitive than swapping in Levis/Richardson/Stroud for the Giraffe.

Fair point

I just don't think they can win with the 2 they have but that's fair.

I think he will win regardless, as the poster above pointed out. With DeMeco and the new talent infusion, this team should go from 2 to 6 wins with Mills almost by default. Nice improvement, with expectations next year for playoffs.

Because 1) there's no guarantee you'll be in position to grab either of those guys next year, 2) there's no guarantee either of those guys will still be as highly regarded this time next year.

I remember the lead up to the draft last year, all anyone was talking about regarding last year's QB class is how the 2023 class (led by Young and Levis, at the time) was more highly regarded. Lo and behold, once the next crop of QBs came under the microscope, there were questions and concerns about them. Very good chance it will be the same next year.

If the Texans decision-makers don't think the QBs available are worth the high draft pick, that's fine. I think lots on here are starting to come around to that idea, especially if Bryce is off the board. But I think it's foolish to not address QB at all and then hope you are in position to pick Caleb Williams and hope that he's as good as he's thought to be now. I think they have to address QB either in the draft or from some of these trade options.
Cartographer
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I don't think they can go wrong grabbing a QB or an edge rusher. Where they can really screw this up will be to not address the defensive talent overall, or the O-line.

Either way you go, you have to wait at least a year for them to settle in and understand the game.

I tend to think this team gets the defense and running game right this year, gets a QB they love next year, and pushes for the playoffs in his second season after that.

Seems like a no brainer to me to pass on any of these 3 remaining qb's after Young this year. Make the defense special.

Plus you make the possible future cap hits much lighter if you somehow hit on these defensive guys with 5th years as opposed to a QB and WR. Staggering possible cap hurdles out over years is another factor to consider, assuming they hit on their picks.

I just read the worst sentence in the NFL on SI.com

I heard Houston has been legitimately torn this week over whether to go quarterback or edge rusher at No. 2, and owner Cal McNair is pretty involved in the discussion on that. One argument for going edge rusher first would be that the drop-off in edge rusher in what you'd get at No. 2 vs. No. 12 (where you could be forced to reach for someone such as Clemson's Myles Murphy) is steeper than it is at quarterback. This debate also is why GM Nick Caserio, known as a bit conservative, is exploring a trade up from 12.

God please no……

I may be off base on this one. But if I'm running the Texans draft, I'm taking Anderson at 2 and then seeing if I can swing a trade for 12, drop down to about 15 or 16 and seeing if I can get Hendon Hooker. ACL and all. If he winds up being a whiff (and I don't think he will), at least you've picked up an extra draft pick or two and there's a fairly solid QB class coming next year……

Yeah I had seen some speculation that Cal may be pushing for QB. Schefter and Werder both said this afternoon it may be leaning QB.

Who knows, lots of smoke screens from the Front Office so we wont really know until some time after 7.

I can't blame them if they were to take Stroud; I'm just not sold on him. But I feel that all the QB's have weaknesses.

And this Bijan talk……. Y'all are nuts. We got a hell of a pick last year with Pearce and now you want to take his replacement? If you're thinking RB at all, take a little shifty, pass catcher type like Tony Pollard.

I know a guy……..

Wore #6 for Texas A&M the last few years.

If he's still there at the top of rd 3 I think we'd be insane not to take him
