Wow. Snyder refuses to cooperate with NFL investigation and still gets what he wants for the Skins. Guy is a HOF level POS. Wonder if he'll continue to needle other people in the NFL once he's out or if he'll go away quietly to avoid any further potential litigation against him.

He got the highly marketable Redskins and the Stadium for 800 million

Now he is selling the unmarketable Commanders for 6 billion

I wanna be a POS when I grow up

Wow,I wonder if the minority owners that the NFL forced out because they reported on Snyder's illegal financial activities to the NFL, and the NFL protected Snyder, will sue the NFL and Snyder for the rightful share % of the $6B.

Would love to see the legal team of other Billionaires take the NFL and Snyder to task.

well, one thing from reading Snyder's backstory...

he is kind of a self-made millionaire then billionaire.

did not inherit his millions or his team

unlike many of the current owners who were born with silver spoons in their mouths and then some

He is by far the worst NFL owner in the 40 years I've watched. Lots of horrible results, underachievement and scandals. I didn't have an issue with him fighting the name change for as long as he did. If one can afford to purchase an NFL franchise it's probably the surest return on investment there is.

Art Modell is the worst owner and it isn't even close
Dude borrowed money from his starting QB
Then sold out an entire city and franchise for peanuts

Owners who move teams are certainly going to be villified by the fans left behind. I never cared for Modell but can't deny his overall contributions to the game for many years. Snyder has basically never contributed anything, hasn't won anything, and has been nothing but trouble. Triple crown of losers.

Models didn't want to stick out the remainder of his lease so as part of the settlement, he gave up the team name, history etc.

Adams was willing to stay in Houston through the end of his lease. it got so bad at the end that city/county let him leave a year early anyway

I can't remember specifics of what happened in Houston and Cleveland 25+ years ago. I know both owners wanted new stadiums and it was probably time for each of those teams to have a new stadium. Didn't work work. But what's interesting to me is that both cities sought out franchises and immediately built new stadiums. That doesn't make sense to me. Why not just build the stadium and keep the current team?

Exactly, Dan Snyder never did anything to me. Bud Adams on the other hand did plenty. Moving the team of my childhood was the first step, not allowing the Oilers name to come back to Houston was the other. I still don't get why the NFL didn't make Adams agree to release the team name and history as a part of the agreement to move. When the NFL allowed Modell to move the Browns part of the agreement was that the name and history would remain with the city of Cleveland for when they got a new team.

Adams wanted a new stadium the same time the Astros were getting theirs. They couldn't do two new stadiums at the same time. The Astros moved downtown because you can build a baseball-only venue on a smaller piece of property than you can a football stadium. Rather than wait it out Adams just left.

It's been a long time so I don't know if there were discussions about a new stadium to house them both or not. If McLane got a stadium first my gut feeling is that he didn't want to share and was able to come up with a proposal to get a new one downtown that was attractive to the city. It wouldn't shock me if neither of them wanted to share a stadium, if that's the case then McLane won and Adams lost.

I don't believe the Houston Sports Authority was formed at the time when Adams left, so the Astros were definitely not getting a new stadium at the time. The voters approved the HSA by a slim 16K votes after Adams was gone to provide the funds to build MMP and then NRG and the Rockets facility.

The timing was close but the Astros were definitely not guaranteed a new park. After Adams left, the Astros threatened to leave and that's when all the dominos started to fall for new stadiums.

The sentiment was not there for Adams because the tax payers were still paying for the renovations to the Dome that he had demanded a few years earlier. That ruined most of what made the Dome unique.

ETA - I remember this because I was out of state and called information in Houston (the number to call back then to get phone numbers of people - kinda like the white pages) to see if the proposition passed to build the stadium. I used the phone because that was before the news was on the internet on a regular basis. I believe it was fall of 1996. Maybe 1997.

I can understand your perspective being so close to that negative experience with Bud Adams who was very unlikeable to many. But I when judging the performance of owners from a league wide perspective Modell and Adams far exceed Snyder.

He made a lot of his money owning a company that slammed phone users and switched phone service providers without permission. The practice was unscrupulous and was eventually outlawed.

So, yes, he's self-made, but his method of building wealth was basically stealing.

NFL didn't protect Snyder. They wanted him out and gave him enough rope to hang himself. Minority partners wanted out because Snyder is impossible to deal with.

He is cash poor and used the team as collateral for loans, and those loans are coming due and he cannot pay them so they provided a basis the league could use to get him to "voluntarily" sell the team.

explained above. Adams was willing to wait out the lease.

Modell was not. he wanted a settlement so he could leave ASAP.

I'll never forget the preseason game that my brother-in-law got free tickets to from some dude in 7-11. We went to the game, bought popcorn and got in our seats, and the officials were down in one of the end zones looking at the turf. That was the game they ended up cancelling, basically because Bud Adams wanted out of there.

To try to salvage the evening, we went to a bar to watch the Mike Tyson vs. "Hurricane" Peter McNeeley fight. Needless to say, that was a dud, too.

There is an old saying that He who owns the gold makes the rules....and back in 1996 Bud Adams had all the gold.
The man was spiteful, and had major enemies in Houston.

He kept the history, team name, and colors of the Houston Oilers to be mean. Deep down Adams knew that by bleeding it with the Nashville Franchise that the Oilers would eventually be forgotten about.

What needs to happen is that the Houston Texans franchise needs to buy back the history from the Tennessee Titans.

if you are a Houston fan would you be interested in this proposition?
Texans trade two each 6th round draft picks in the 24 and 25 drafts to the Titans.
Texans receive the Oiler portion of the team history to be given back to the city Houston.

What if you were the current owner?

What would you want from the city of Houston to give back the Oilers colors, history and team record?

I would just give it for free.

The current owner is still part of the Adams family. They know we want the name and colors and they purposefully will not return it, no matter the price. Part of it, I'm sure, has to do with the fact they don't want to let go of any part of "their" legacy and history.

Houston fans are not asking for that, just the name and colors. Shoot, I'd even be fine with getting the Oilers name back.

Who knows if Cal would even want to change the name anyway. It should have been part of the agreement to move but neither the NFL nor Adams family cared.

Have any of you ever watched the Godfather?
Its time to make the Adams family an offer they can't refuse. Money, hookers, blow, draft picks.....you name it. Come up with something creative.

Warren Moon, Ray Childress, Earl Campbell and the other Oiler greats deserve to be recognized in Houston, TX.
Right now all of the ex-Oilers are in purgatory aka no-mans land. A throwback game in Nashville means nothing to residents of Tennessee.
The Houston, Texans should be able to wear throwback Houston Oilers jersey.

This fall will mark the 30 year anniversary of the 1993 Houston Oilers.......which I believe was the last Houston football team that was in serious contention for the Super Bowl.

have you seen it? the line essentially means "do what we say, or you will be killed"

the only things the Adams would want from them are things the Texans won't give. statute, multiple first round draft picks etc.
