'An outstanding leader': Sean Payton officially named new Broncos coach

Quote:

In a statement Friday afternoon, Broncos owner/CEO Greg Penner called Payton "an outstanding leader and Super Bowl champion with a brilliant offensive mind"...

I'm a Saints fan. I felt like Payton was always one up on the defense. I am feeling completely punked. The Saints got a couple of draft picks in exchange for one of the great offensive minds in the game. Shakes head.

My theory bout Payton is he is known to be best friends with the saints GM and very good friends with the owner. He purposely retired knowing the Saints were going to be bad. All parties knew he would come back this year with some nice draft compensation. He did it as a favor to the Saints.

Yeah… I'm sure it was that and not the $17-20m he's getting annually the next 5 years that put it over the top.

The Saints made out like bandits in this deal? You're really upset?

They got a first and second for what was essentially a paperweight.

Payton was not contributing anything whatsoever and they turned him into 2 high quality picks. They gave up nothing.

I think that the Saints preferred him going to the AFC so they made out pretty well.

You obviously don't understand my post. Payton knew he was coming back and wanted to do his former team and best friend a solid.

It was actually more than that. But this is what they've given up total recently

Quote:

To acquire Wilson the Broncos traded first round picks in 2022 and 2023, second round picks in 2022 and 2023, a fifth round pick in 2022, quarterback Drew Lock, tight end Noah Fant and defensive lineman Shelby Harris.
They recouped one of those first round picks by trading Bradley Chubb and a fifth-round pick to the Miami Dolphins for a first-round pick in 2023, a fourth-round pick in 2024 and running back Chase Edmonds.
The Broncos then turned around and traded that first round pick acquired for Chubb, as well as a 2024 second-round pick, to the Saints for Payton and a 2024 third-round pick.

I'm talking about the Saints.

The Saints had Payton who was literally dead weight. Not working for them whatsoever and turned him into a 1st and 2nd.

They did give up a 3rd but that and Payton who was the equivalent of a old sled stuffed away in the equipment closet for two high picks.

That's coming out ahead. Saints fans should be ecstatic especially given that if Payton would've gone elsewhere next year they'd have gotten nothing.

It's a great deal for the Saints. Payton wasn't coming back to New Orleans regardless. Most teams lose coaches and don't get anything in return (ex Tampa losing Ariens)

Don't get me wrong, I didn't like the Wilson trade but they're married to it now. Hackett didn't work out, but I think a lot of that blame falls on Russ. I don't think there was any other move to make but to double down and hope Russ plays better this year under Payton. He showed some flashes after Hackett was fired that he still has something in the tank. Lets be real, if he doesn't no coach, draft pick, free agent or anything else will make the Broncos more competitive. It all starts with getting Russ on track.

All that being said, the Broncos have a great defense already. Tons of skill position talent with Sutton and Jeudy. Also getting Tim Patrick back from injury along with Javonte Williams. They really need to address the offensive line. But it is incorrect that they have no cap. They are actually about middle of the league in terms of space. Plus they'll most certainly cut Edmonds, probably renogotiate with Glasgow or cut him and may even get rid of Bolles. But like I said, they have talent but its all moot if Russ sucks again.

are we sure that Sutton and Jeudy are really above average WR's?

both have been in the league for a while

I understood your post. He made $8.5m his last year with the Saints, reportedly made $10m with Fox Sports (so left a harder job for a pay raise for a TV job) and came back to make $17m a year with the Broncos putting him right up there with McVeigh as the highest paid coach in football.

This had zero to do with him getting his bros some draft picks.

I'm just pissed that he's coaching for someone other than the Saints.

I repeat. As a Saints fan, I feel completely punked having Sean Payton coaching for someone else.
