Folks in the know like Broaddus are saying that Jerry is legitimately angry. Wonder if Jerry, knowing his time is getting shorter, tries to make a splash?

I doubt it and even so it probably wouldn't make a difference as long as Jerry is still there BUT as a Cowboys fan (now long suffering) I'd be willing to take it and see what happens.

I think it would be really good for Dak. I don't think Moore has proved anything….Payton on the other hand has a long history of good to great QB play. I mean he made Winston look pretty good.

Yes, and they have a terrible cap situation. Can't imagine Payton wants another couple years with Winston and Hill.

I assume this would have to involve a trade since Payton is still under contract?

Payton only has one year left on his deal. Could use it as leverage to have to send less in return since in a year he can walk for nothing. Or you give Mccarthy one more shot and pick up Payton for nothing next year

I would approve of hiring Payton. 100%.

This year wasn't all on big Mike, but his (Jerry's) coordinator and O-line coach really let the team down. Can't say the WR coach really did much either. We got zero returns from that side of the ball 2nd half of the year when on paper they should have been a TD scoring machine!

So we trash talk McCarthy all year....Payton has been with Brees this whole time and only 1 superbowl as well

As a Cowboys fan, I'd take 1 more Super Bowl win.

Agreed. Either bring in payton or bump up Quinn to HC. Jerry has to know in his gut that mike isn't the guy

McCarthy is a very marginal improvement over Garrett. Bring on Sean!!

I do think Payton is a tinny bit overrated, but I would still take him all day long.

To your point, was it 2 years ago or 3 where the 'no call' basically stole an NFC championship from him?

I think Payton had a ton to do with Brees' success. It's not like he was a scrub at SD, but his toolset was not exactly spectacular. And his shoulder got wrecked to hell at the very end of the SD stay. Payton gets him at age 27 with a newly constructed shoulder. Brees has a long productive career, but he's also had a bubblegum arm for a long time.

Should have played in two SBs.

I believe Sean Payton and his family still live in the Dallas area so they probably would like him to come back home.

And don't forget the Minnesota Miracle that if his DB doesn't go brain dead on the last play, they go to the NFC Championship game the year before that….

Payton has had a couple of incredibly tough breaks.

There's a report that Aikman may leave for either a front office job or for Amazon Thursday Night Football, and Fox is looking at Payton to replace him.

Interesting. I do think Troy is beaten by doing Thursdays and Sundays

I can totally see Aikman in a front office.

As for Payton I'd finally be happy w a Cowboys head coaching hire. First time since Parcells.

Aikman will not go into the Cowboys front office and work for Jerry. Sean Payton will not come to Dallas and work for Jerry.

Not without substantial changes on the part of Jerry, hire a GM, quit talking to reporters, quit doing a radio show, quit attending coaches meeting and participating like you are on the staff, quit being the final say and outsized vote on personnel matters, etc., etc.

Parcells made some pretty hard requirements on Jerry and he was willing to do what it took to get him. Wonder is Peyton could do the same?

I think you are right. Wasn't 100% opposed to the McCarthy hire, but I was very "meh, we'll see what happens" about it. And now I'm pretty sure I've seen enough to know where this is going.

Payton would give me hope for next year.... and bring in Zimmer as DC if Quinn leaves. All aboard the reunion tour bus!

Me too. My bet would be on a California team though.

Decent interview with Aikman on Russillo's podcast today. Aikman said that he was planning to sign with the Chargers after his final season with Dallas, but they wound up signing Flutie after he was cut by the Bills, so it fell through.

Good lord, do your research. 3 NFC Championship games in last 15 years, 1 Super Bowl win, another one taken by the refs. How have the Cowboys fared during that time?
In my experience, there's no such thing as luck.

Yes, and don't forget the Minn Miracle where his CB went completely brain dead on the last play or that would have been a 4th NFC championship game. Payton has had some really tough breaks go against him.

Radio just said he's under contract through 24? That means Saints def will need compensation.

Yes, any NFL team that wants to employ him prior to 2025 will likely have to ante up. Payton would also be around 60 at that point. Not too old by any means, but getting a bit long in the tooth. He may decide to never come back

I think all we really know right now is that Payton realizes he's not winning squat in NO with no QB, so may as well take a break. If it's permanent or not, who knows.
