I could be wrong but it seems like a majority of nfl teams conduct training camp close to home but dallas goes to California. Why is that?

Wonder if that will be done once new Frisco facility is done

My guess is Jerry does it as part of the branding. And the weather is nice out there. I was at the Navy base out there for a few months and a ton of the local civil servants had Cowboys gear.

That's all it is.... Jerry has to take his circus on the road and make his $$$$$$$

What does it hurt? As long as they get the work in I don't care if they train on the moon. Johnson moved it from Thousand Oaks because he felt it was not hot enough and the players would not get in proper condition. Now the mindset is do not blow out their legs for the long season.

Beats me.

No reason to train there when they could simply move it back to Wichita Falls.

Since Wichita Falls is so close to Dallas it does not strengthen the Cowboy brand. They already own it. Jones is trying to extend the popularity of the Cowboys. If he were allowed I promise you he would have them train in Beijing.

for the majority of their existence the Cowboys have had camp in California.

Thousand Oaks was their spot for 26 straight years.

Its probably more to do with weather than brand at this point. Also the chicas are pretty fine in SoCal and Jerrah has a wandering eye.

I've heard that when the Frisco facility opens, training camp will be moved there. Most teams hold camp at their practice fcailites now. In a previous era, before the modern indoor practice facilites were invented, all teams held camp out of town at colleges. Since the heat in Texas is brutal, the Cowboys went to California for it. Plus, Tex Schramm wanted his team to have coast-to-coast exposure.

More productive in cooler weather + exposure. I expect Frisco will be perm home.

I think it also inconveniences Dale Hanson to go to and cover them, being away from his family and all. Jerry Jones hates Dale Hanson.

Weather is much better. And get away from local distractions. Those were the reasons in the 1970s, probably still valid.

I remember going to the Oilers training camp in San Angelo.

I don't think "better weather" qualifies.

I remember going to the Cowboys camps in the 90s at St. Ed's. Deion cruising around in a Mercedes golf cart.

They trashed the **** out of those dorms every year.

I like the idea of going away, and getting away from all the distractions of family, friends or anything else.

Getting away from distraction? The crowds are the same and does family travel?

The fans may be a distraction during field time(doubtful) but when these teams get away at small colleges, they watch film, workout, play video games in the dorm, eat all their meals together, all great team building.
When they get away their families are not there, they may come visit for a few nights, but for the most part they are away for 3 weeks, engulfed in football and nothing else. I'm speaking of the teams that go to small college campuses, Bills, jets, steelers....these guys are living in a dorm away from most distractions.

In the good 'ole days, Landry wanted the cooler weather so he could spend more time perfecting his plays. Tex liked the coverage in the LA media, and he actually got more coverage in Dallas by having training camp in the Valley. The high cost of the sending reporters to Thousand Oaks guaranteed that there would have to be more stories to justify the expense.

In the Jerry Jones era, Austin turned into Animal House, and Wichita Falls became the Cowboys version of Junction. San Antonio had heat issues as well as issues having practice every day on the turf at Alamodome. Also there were scheduling conflicts with the Alamodome due to Jehovah Witnesses conventions.

I know Jerry will want to have it in Frisco at the new facility, but it will still be blast furnace hot. By this time Jerry will probably have a new coach as the no playoffs streak gets worse, so will need a new gimmick to sell. He will get tons of local families that are priced out of the new stadium to attend camp in Frisco.

@BMXBandit

Jerry announced today they will be coming back to Oxnard not just next year but into the foreseeable future, regardless of Frisco.

I agree with the majority of the posters. He does it to carry the Cowboys brand to the West Coast, where there is a big foothold already, but one that can always expand.

That, plus Garrett doesn't strike me as a coach like Jimmy or Parcells or Landry, who would want to toughen up their players in hot weather. Or maybe more accurately, Jerry probably whispers in his ear how much nicer it is to have camp in a place with great weather.

If you are asking the question you've never been to Oxnard in August. There is nothing in Texas that comes close in terms of weather.
