Spinoff of the Bill Cowher thread. Who are the coaches who have retired, sat out a couple seasons or more, and returned?

Have any been successful, have any reached the same level of success they had originally?

Parcells and Joe Gibbs come to mind...neither were as successful as before.

But who else has there been?

No coach has ever won superbowls with 2 different teams.

Vermeil lost with the Eagles and then won with the Rams.

Parcells won with the Giants and lost with the Pats.

Those are the only 2 that I can recall taking 2 different teams to the Super Bowl.

Chuckie didn't make it with the Raiders, nor did Mr. Morality.

Don Shula & Dan Reeves took 2 different teams to the Super Bowl but they didn't have layoffs.

Belichick was fired in Cleveland and had some time before he took over in New England. And Shanahan was fired in Oakland and had some time before he went to Denver. Also, Dungy was fired in Tampa Bay before he won a Super Bowl in Indy. Caughlin was fired in Jax before winning a SB w/the Giants.

All the examples I can think of (Ditka, Seifert, Green) were much worse in their second stints.

I think alot had to do with current talent. I think a retired coach with a team just missing someone to bring it together can win. If ask them to build a winner from scratch, usually unsuccessful.

Forgot those, and neither won both.

And it's still true, not coach has ever won a Super Bowl with 2 different teams.

Marv Levy is a guy that retired but came back better. He didn't have the decade long exile of Vermeil or Gibbs, but it was long time. He never won Super Bowl but had 4 appearances and some great teams.
