With 30 hours to go before the NFL draft begins, trade rumors are heating up. And the latest has the Dallas Cowboys interested in acquiring the 13th overall pick from the San Francisco 49ers.

Matt Maiocco of the Press Democrat reports that the Cowboys are interested in moving up to 13 to select defensive back Earl Thomas of Texas.

Most mock drafts have Thomas still available at 13 but gone before the Cowboys pick at 27, so if the Cowboys are enamored with Thomas, moving up to 13 would make sense.

The 49ers could also take Thomas at 13 themselves, although most reports indicate they're more interested in Florida's Joe Haden there.

That's going to cost too much to jump to 13. If they want to do that why not jump into the top 10 and get Berry? Otherwise, I would be more interested in moving back to the start of the 2nd round and take Nate Allen.

Yeah, that's too steep.

I think if we could swap 1st, throw in a 3rd and maybe next year's 2nd, I could live with that, but we can't afford to rape this year's entire draft.

Too much for earl thomas. now for earl thomas conley, on the other hand, maybe it's not so bad.

OT, OT, OT. Cowboys should stick where they are or trade into the top of the 2nd round and take someone in the Campbell/Davis/Saffold range. Or just flip over the table, say screw it, and trade up for Eric Berry.

We definately need OL help.

However, I suspect there may be a few veteran back up types that could be had in FA after the draft. What I don't want us to do is think we absolutely have to draft this position because that's when teams make mistakes.

I would be really happy if the Cowboys could get Thomas. Like you guys, though, I don't want to give up a ton of draft picks to get him.

Unfortunatly, things aren't always cheap and FS has to be the biggest need right now. I really like Alan Ball in a back-up role, so we need a #1 FS back there and Thomas looks to be an immediate upgrade to what Hamlin provided. Thomas seems to always be around the ball making plays... Hamlin just seemed to be in a race with Bobby Carpenter to jump on top of the ball carrier once he was already down!!!

Update:

Someone in the know pretty much shot down the rumor, responding with amusement when told about that and saying he didn't see the Cowboys making such a deal.

Totally agree. However I'm a little more concerned with the OL because of how frigging old it is... and that will get really expensive to fix via free agency, because good young talent never hits FA, and because good old talent is, well, old.

Jerry will make sure he has at least one pick each day. Draft and drinking go hand-in-hand. He's probably drunk already.

Seems too big a jump to me.

This won't be a popular sentiment, but I'd rather them make a deal with the 'Skins at #4 and get Okung/Williams. If they're going to have to give up an arm and a leg to get to 13, why not give up an arm, a leg, and an ear to get up to #4.

Unfortunatly to jump that far it won't cost you and extra "ear".

It's an arm and a leg to go from #27 to say #12.

It's an arm and a leg and next years arm and a leg to go from #27 to #4.

Has there ever been a first round jump that big before???

dallas makes the move if it costs them a 3rd i think.

by trading the 3rd though that means they'll go a long time between picks later in the draft.

however, if they come out of the draft with Bryant and a player like Ducasse (Tackle outta UMass whose starting to get some attention and gaining steam up the draft boards) then its a pretty damn good first 2 rounds.

i think it would be insane to not do the deal if all it took was a 3rd rounder.

do that deal and trade your second for gaither. offense rolls. defense holds. we're playing the bowl at home next year.

you have to think jerry is really looking to win right now with the super bowl at home next year.

As deep as this draft is, I'd rather them make some moves later rather than in the first round.

And if they want to deal with SF, I'd work the 17th pick instead of the 13th.

I think they'll trade for the 17 and take Dez Bryant if he's still there.

As much as I like Dez and think safety is a pressing need - the more time passes, I think the Cowboys should go OT in the 1st round.

Nothing made it more clear than when DeMarcus dissed Doug Free saying we need to "draft someone or bring him Flozell back." I'm sure he didnt want to throw Free under a bus, but he must not think very highly of him and I trust DeMarcus' judgement. If he isnt impressed by Doug Free as a LT, someone he sees everyday in practice, then we better have depth in case he fails at the position.

the Cowboys are complete MORONS if they do not address Tackle within the first 2 rounds.

if indeed they are going up the boards to get a Bryant or Thomas then they sure as hell either better make that 2nd round pick a Tackle, or they better trade for one with that pick.

i just cant imagine ending this offseason knowing how big a need OT is, and not addressing it. i like Free...but I like him on the right side, not on Romos blind side.

The rumors today is that Dallas and MIami are talking about swaping firsts and Dallas giving Miami it's 2nd. I think I do this for Earl.

Also, keep in mind, you get the night to work a deal to get back into the 2nd round which I think they would do.

If they could get a guy like Saffold and Earl with thier first two picks, that would be very good. Also, let's not forget that John Jerry is a good SEC interior lineman that could probably be had in the 4th. Maybe use that 3rd on a fast twitch WR and that would be a pretty good haul.

1st Earl
2nd SAffold
3rd Gilyard
4th John Jerry
5th Angerer

That would be a wet dream. Now, to get this done, it may cost you your 2nd for next year.

as i posted in the other thread, no way i give up a 2nd rounder this year. its almost as valuable as a 1st rounder with the depth there is in this class.
Macarthur

I agree Orlando, but if JJ could use maybe Spears and next years 3rd to get back into the 2nd overnight, then I think you're in business.
