Ok so my son has been a top QB in our area... was the starting QB for 7th grade, 8th grade and 9th grade. Well after his last 9th grade game the Varsity coaches (it's a 5A school) said they wished he'd go into offseason football with the Varsity. so he has been working out with the Varsity at QB and the coaches are real high on him. Want him to go head to head with the Varsity QB (he will be a senior) in the Spring Game. Coaches have been saying my son is doing GREAT, they can open the playbook up with him etc. Well today was the first day of pads... they told him he made Varsity. After he worked out with the offense he was standing there with some of the guys and an assistant coach walked over and grabbed 2-3 of them including my son and said get in there for the Defensive drills. My son thought about asking the Head Varsity coach if that was ok but went in without asking. you guessed it, basically he was a tackling dummy and got tackled by a huge guy and may have broken his collarbone! My son was one of the 3 guys wearing blue shirts (meaning DO NOT HIT!). Going tomorrow for x-rays but either way he is done for the Spring. He's a fish, 6'1" and weighs only 155 lbs and did not play a down of defense in all of 7th grade, 8th grade and 9th grade... all those coaches knew what they were doing. Am I being ridiculous? Is that just the way it goes?

Sorry to hear that.

I would hope that coach isn't dumb enough to make that move on his own. If so, he might be looking for a new job soon. I can't imagine the head coach giving him a free pass after, from the way you make it sound, he blatantly put his potential starting QB in harms way.

I guess what I'd like to hear is from any other athletes out there that have fractured or injured their collar bone... is there a good chance he can regain his throwing motion? or will it never be the same? I know there are many variables. I am just sick knowing this should not have happened. He was also a good baseball player, great swing and decent pitcher.

I dont think they were going to start him next year (as a soph), his old middle school coaches know the Varsity guys and have told us the Varsity coaches are very impressed and he as a "road paved to be the Varsity QB his junior year".

Normal break, from my experience, he should be fine. But I'm not a dr.

I broke mine, compound fracture. Very painful for a few days but recovered completely and was out only about 7 weeks.

Shouldn't be a problem unless there are some complications.

OPAG ouch! How did that happen?

My son was a litte down when he got home today right after the injury, but he's walking around right now in a sling all pumped about making Varsity.

Broke mine freshman year sat out 4 weeks and was back at it normal as could be....Doc said I needed to sit out 6 weeks but...I couldn't stand the sidelines.

Now the medical side of me....would suggest xrays, bracing if broken and sitting out 6-8 weeks since he is a QB. Depending on healing potentially back throwing (soft toss) 4 weeks.

With a little PT along the way to strengthen and help any ROM issues

As long as its a normal break...it will be an after thought and just be thankful it happened in spring ball not the fall.

edit to add PT suggestion...will be most important part of proper healing

Because coaches have to consult parents on what position their son's play?

Doesn't work that way buddy....

Lefty, your son will be fine by the time fall rolls around.

his Spring will suffer but overall he should be ok.

i'm sure the coach in question already feels like a dumbass so dont go complaining too much about it. you dont wanna be one of 'those' dads although in this circumstance i can understand your feeling.

Maybe you should read the whole paragraph as one thought "buddy."

The assistant coach might want to consult with the head coach before he puts one of the kids competing for the starting QB position and is obviously wearing a "no hit" jersey on the field to play defense.

It does work that way "buddy."

Orlando, exactly. I am definitely not one of those dads. In fact, the Head Coach called our house tonight to make sure we go get x-rays and that they want him back on the sideline ASAP...anyway I made my wife take the call, I didn't want to say something I'd regret, it wasn't the HC's fault... plus the kid is just a fish!

Head Coach called again this morning at 7:45 to see how son was doing, how last night went and if he was going to be able to make film session today.

Off to orthopedic guy (shoulder/sports injury specialist) for xrays, fingers crossed.

I can already predict that if you son is not in dire pain then unless there is some soft tissue damage with the shoulder he will be fine rather quickly.

I am glad the HC called he should, and I am sure the D coach got chewed on pretty good. You just don't send a 9th grade kid 155 kid into a 5A varsity scimmage especially if they are a QB and wearing a no hit jersey.

There are a few coaches that give the profession a the neanderthal stereotype, it's like no staff is complete without one> LOL

just got back from orthopedic office, xrays did show a clean fracture so it should heal up nicely. phew.

Thanks Ags for all the replies, good to hear other similar stories.

Make sure you let it heal all the way before throwing him back in the weight room... You feel fine then go back and end up hurting it again (broken humerus wrestling, refractured it) it was depressing cause my max bench dropped 45 pounds, but you can gain it back, just take it easy and everything will be fine...

Lorenz, good advice and we will stick to it. I don't think he'll drop off that much, after all he is a string bean. He is finding out that SNEEZING isn't so fun.

Dumbass move, but as someone mentioned, at least the coach has checked on him and I'd be confident the assistant did get slapped upside the head. Time to move on and get healthy.

OH YEA!!! I mean moving and breathing wasn't very for me those first three days. But then after a week there was no pain at all and I felt normal except that I was wearing the strap.

I learned how girls must have felt wearing a bra! Glad I am a guy!
