Although CB isn't the Cowboys primary need, Devin might be too tempting to pass on if he's still around at pick #27. He could immediately become the punt and kickoff return man in addition to playing CB. If this were to happen I wouldnt be opposed to consider trying Stanback at FS or entertain the idea of trading Newman.

Here is an article from Rick Gosselin on McCourty.

Rick Gosselin profiles seven players the Cowboys may target in the first round of the NFL Draft on April 22.

The Cowboys have a solid cornerback trio in Pro Bowlers Terence Newman and Mike Jenkins plus Orlando Scandrick. But Newman turns 32 this season. The defending NFC East champions do not have any pressing needs and insist they will take the best value on the board when they select at 27.

The best value may be Devin McCourty of Rutgers. In addition to an All-Big East cornerback, he may be the best special-teams player in this draft. Not only does he return kickoffs -- having averaged 25.4 yards last season with a touchdown -- he blocks kicks. He rejected six punts and a field goal in his career. And in 2006, the only season he did not start at Rutgers, McCourty led the Scarlet Knights in special-teams tackles with 14.

McCourty was a captain and team MVP in 2009, then flashed his pro potential at the NFL scouting combine at Indianapolis in February when he blazed a 4.34 40-yard dash. He has the size at 5-11, 193 pounds and also the genes. His brother and former college teammate Jason was a sixth-round draft pick by Tennessee in 2009 who wound up starting a handful of games for the Titans.

The Cowboys did finish 20th in the NFL in pass defense last season, so there's room for improvement. With passing on the upswing in the NFL and more and more teams employing three- and four-receiver sets, you can never have enough quality cover men.

Did you just suggest trying Stanback at FS? Really?

Vinny:

Stanback is now a WR for the Pats. Not only a WR for the Pats..but a WR who is expected to contribute in their WR rotation this year. So in short, I think we'd all be very shocked if he ended up at Safety for the Cowboys.

There are some very good reports coming out on McCourty though...if he's there, I wouldn't mind taking him. However, if Dez Bryant or one of the 1st round projected OLs are still there..I think we go in that direction instead.

Sorry, I had a brain fart. That's why I need to stay of TexAgs while I'm at work.

I meant to say Scandrick, no Stanback. Geez, I don't know why he came to mind. I've done my best to get that memory out of my mind.

WTH could you even get for Newman at this point in time?
