HOUSTON – The Houston Texans have signed strong safety Chris Carter. A sixth-year player, Carter is a native of Tyler and attended the University of Texas.

Carter, 6-2, 212, has missed only one game in his six seasons with New England and Cincinnati. In 2001 with the Bengals he started four games and saw significant playing time in nickel and dime situations. He was claimed off waivers from New England by Cincinnati in 2000 and started 10 of 16 games played.

A third round selection by New England in the 1997 NFL Draft, Carter played in all 16 games as a rookie, primarily on special teams. In 1998 he recorded 17 tackles, one sack and 20 special teams tackles in 16 games played. He won the starting free safety job in 1999 and recorded 94 tackles, three interceptions and one sack.

Carter started 43 of 47 games at Texas and led the team as a senior with 120 tackles. At John Tyler High in Tyler, he earned first-team All-America honors as a senior, playing free safety and wide receiver.

The Texans currently have 71 players on the roster. The Texans acquired 18 players in the expansion draft, four by trade/waivers, one restricted free agent, 18 rookie and first year free agents, 24 veteran free agents, and six unrestricted free agents – RB James Allen, WR Corey Bradford, SS Chris Carter, LB Greg Jones, C/G Steve McKinney and LB Kailee Wong.
