Texans ink five free agents

HOUSTON – The Houston Texans announced Tuesday that they have signed five free agents, increasing their roster to 34 players.
The newest Texans are defensive end Dorian Boose, wide receiver Eric Chew, linebacker Troy Evans, safety Toya Jones and center Mike Newell.
Boose (6-5, 292) played his first three seasons for the Jets before appearing in eight games last season for Washington. He has 23 career tackles. Chew (6-1, 183), a former McNeese State standout, originally signed with San Francisco as an undrafted free agent in 2000.
Evans (6-3, 243) spent the 2001 season on the Rams practice squad. Newell (6-4, 300) logged two seasons on the Rams practice squad after originally signing with Green Bay as an undrafted free agent in 1999. He also saw NFL Europe action with the Scottish Claymores.
Jones (6-1, 199), a free safety out of Texas A&M, saw time in 49ers camp before playing for Birmingham in the XFL and British Columbia in the Canadian Football League.
The Texans will conduct their expansion draft Monday at 2 p.m. at the George R. Brown Convention Center.
