DUI's are easy to get off your record. Its DWI's that will screw you I think.

Byron is correct.

I got a DUI in CS, and I had no problem getting offers and finding a good job.

Now, if you have a ton of other stuff....But nah, most people won't care about DUI.

One word though, DUI in Texas is different from DUI elsewhere. When people in NY, FL and all the other states hear DUI, it is driving while drunk, the equivalent of DWI in Texas. DUI is a much smaller offense in Texas, and that fact may need to be explained to someone who is unfamiliar with Texas Laws.

A DWI never goes away, but as you get older it becomes less important. If you don't get a job, no one will ever tell you that that is the reason that they didn't hire you, so it's hard to tell.

Last year I had to pay an extra $100 deposit on an apartment because of a DWI 15 years ago.

I would think that a major company might have some policy about hiring people with such stains on their records, particularly if you'll be traveling and driving around a lot. A smaller, private company might not even run a background check on you, in which case you'll be A-OK. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. I know plenty of people who got in lots of trouble throughout college, and ended up landing respectable jobs and positions with respective companies, both large and small.

find a lawyer to ask such questions.
I imagine they work with situations like yours all the time.

Most companies are only going to check your non-felony record 7 years back - DWI falls off your record after 7 years.

DWI does not fall off your record...not after 7 and not after 20.

Just FYI- if you get a DWI/DUI- get Bill Youngkin as your attorney. He got my buddy out of his DUI, and I've heard he's done the same for others. It's well worth the money.

Don't get another one. Potential employers could view multiple DUIs/DWIs as a pattern of bad behavior.

It won't completely come off your record - but your insurance won't be impacted after 7 years (so I've been told be an insurance agent)

And companies that perform background checks rarely check beyond 7 years.

It's not a good thing to get, but it's not life ending.

One DWI on your record should not hinder your ability to get a good job. If asked about it in an interview, try to show how it was a dumb mistake and how you've become a better person because of it - i.e., volunteer work you've done in the community to combat drunk driving, etc.

Most people have driven while intoxicated, so most people think, "There but for the grace of God go I" when they see you have a DWI. Although I am by no means trying to say it is not a serious crime, it is probably one of the most "socially acceptable" misdemeanor crimes to have on your record as opposed to, say, solicitation of prostitution or indecent exposure or something.

In Texas, DUI can only be given to someone under 21. If you are under 21 and have any detectable alcohol in your system, you can get a DUI.
In Texas, a DWI is more similiar to other state's DUI. It is Driving While Intoxicated (which means loss of normal use or mental or physical faculties by the reason of the introduction of alcohol or by having an alcohol concentration of 0.08 or higher). Any age can get a DWI.

If under 21 and have any alcohol = DUI
If under 21 and meet requirements for DWI = DWI which is a higher charge than DUI.
