HS Coach of 11 years looking to make a change. I have had some success in coaching, but I am now looking for something that could allow more financial freedom. The hours & other challenges that come with coaching/teaching are taking a toll.

Any leads/advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I recently transitioned from being a teacher and coach. If you need a sounding board of advice I would happily chat with you anytime. DM me and we can exchange contact details.

DfwAg11, I'm also a current teacher/coach ready to make the jump. I can't DM you, is there another route I could take to contact you? I would appreciate the advice.

What are you all looking to do next? I understand you may not have it figured out, but maybe ideas for the board so we can help direct you.

I think that is the question I am struggling with, Coaching is all I have done in my professional career.

I just do not know what other jobs out there would be a fit based on my qualifications & work history. I also cant afford to take a significant pay cut at this point in my life just to start something brand new.

I'm in the same boat. I'd love to get out of the profession and have a better work/life balance. But I did 9 years in the Marine Corps in a combat job and now have coached and taught PE for 8 years. Sure I have some skills and lots of intangibles that are marketable, but it's all entry level and some of those aren't that good of a fit. With my stipends I make $78k before taxes. Don't know how to leave and not take a significant pay cut that will impact my family.

There seems to be quite a few former coaches in the insurance industry. Generally, the sales side of the industry chews up and spits out more people than those who make it, and the underwriting side is hard to break into midcareer, but it may be worth looking into. There are a variety of roles to consider.

Same with coaches in pumping jobs in the oilfield. They all tell me they are making way more and don't miss teaching one bit. I work with at least 6 guys that were all HS coaches and transitioned to the production side of the oilfield.

I've been there. I'm lucky that I transitioned out in my 20s and not later, so that $40k salary wasn't hard to find elsewhere at entry level. I also interviewed with two managers that knew how much hard work and focus it took to coach/teach and see the potential in me.

If anyone finds anything they would be interested in at Igloo Coolers (where I work now), shoot me an email at CoachRTM09 at gmail.com, and I'll help however I can. Right now it looks like we have mostly warehouse openings, but it can change regularly.

I left Coaching/Teaching after the 2023 school year after 13 years and it was a tough decision but probably the best decision I made for my family.

I work for a general contractor now on the Project Management path (currently a Project Engineer). The skills and work ethic I learned from my previous experience coaching have helped me tremendously and set me a part from other entry level PEs. After 11 months I got my first raise that was way more than any raise i received teaching and put me well above what I was making after 13 years (in some pretty solid districts even).

That's not to mention the more time I get to spend at home with my family, especially kiddos. I get to pick my son/daughter up everyday from daycare now, which also lessens the load on my wife.

Please feel free to email me at my username at gmail dot com if anyone has any questions. Our company is big on hiring teachers/coaches.

I work at a university as a testing coordinator. It's not rocket science, and being bored sometimes (not as much human to human interaction) is better than being stressed out.

You may look in that direction. Also, it's the same retirement.

My wife left teaching/coaching in 2021 and does instructional design for Southwest Airlines now. She had to learn how to use some different softwares and programming stuff, but she makes significantly more money now than she did.
