Howdy - I'm currently at a very large company and have a great relationship with a business partner looking to bring me on. It's a small, sturdy shop, as I understand it.
1. What should I be asking for to understand how strong the business he owns is if it's privately owned? I'd prefer not take his word alone but don't want to come across as if I don't believe him.
2. It's a sales role and I'd like to entertain the idea of a creative agreement. A random thought is "pay me base alone in cash annually and all sales commission is given as equity to be realized in X years or upon sale.
My goals are to set my family up for the future by putting skin in the game regarding the growth of the company. Basically I want to be the Bobby Bonilla of software.
