From a construction perspective there's hardly any effort at all involved in skipping the 13th floor. Most of the time it's just relabeled as the 14th and the elevator doesn't know any difference.

OTOH, It would be much more difficult to retrofit an elevator to accommodate or avoid a 13th floor if it wasn't originally configured that way. That would involve completely new software and hardware.

It's not nearly as common to skip the floor as it was in the past, as it doesn't seem to bother people as much nowadays.

Interestingly, some elevators in China avoid any floor with a "4" in it (e.g. 4, 14, 24) because the word for 4 sounds like the word for "death."

Is it still called an Elevator even when it's going down, or does it switch to De-Elevator?

Did Thomas Magnum really have an uncle Otis that was in the elevator business?

Elevator Mechanics are among the highest paid blue collar workers in America (several years running) and there is a dire need for them right now. Median salary is around $97k, most can make well above that with OT.
I know some adjusters that make over $200k.

Let's go for the trifecta. Elevators, escalators, and... moving walkways!

From an efficiency standpoint, what can be done to restrict people from standing on the left side clogging the walkway?

Very possible. Of course, a lot of this depends on what Local the techs belong to. If it still holds true, Local 8 in San Fran pays the most out of everyone. I think they make around $77/hour, not including OT. While it's tough and (sometimes) dangerous work, it can be lucrative.

I think the key with this is to provide for the maximum pallet width during design. If the walkway isn't wide enough, passengers aren't going to feel either the need or the comfort required to step to the side.

Further, signage has to play a part, which can also be incorporated into the design. Marking the pallets with "lanes" will encourage passengers to make a decision on how they travel on the walkway.

Copied from another source...but this is another question I get from time to time...

"...DON'T JUMP! That's right, jumping in an elevator is a terrible idea. Sure, it might sound fun and even be a bit tempting for the daredevil and scientist in all of us, but the outcome is a really expensive and potentially dangerous pain for everyone; depending on where you live it can even be a misdemeanor and/or cost you thousands.

What DOES happen when you jump in an elevator? Elevators are equipped with sensors that look for any deviation of normal use. The sudden impact from a jump can cause the elevator to sense something out of the ordinary and it will stop . Once that happens, those inside the elevator will have to use the help button and wait until a trained professional can let them out.

If you have a little mad scientist by your side, explain that jumping is an unsafe practice. Hold the rail and wait calmly for your floor to exit."

This is from the Elevator and Escalator Safety Foundation...

1. Do you have model elevators in your home?

2. What kind of pranks may elevator consultants pull on the FNGs?

3. What are your personal and professional opinions on the 13th floor?

Some good questions here that I haven't seen answers to.

The job title 'Elevator Consultant' sounds like one of those jobs that the couples on 'House Hunters' have.

Husband: "I'm Rick, and I'm an Elevator Consultant".
Wife: "Hi, I'm Amy and I Reimagine Umbrellas".
Both together: "We're looking for a beach house in Malibu, and our budget is $74 million".

Why are elevator passengers always equidistant from each other? You can have four people in the elevator, and then it stops at a floor and one gets off. Then the three remaining will readjust so that they are all equidistant from each other.

I'm the guy that doesn't adjust when people get on or get off the elevator. The psychology is fascinating.

Sometimes guys stand their ground out of a protective defensive response, sometimes they move and makes me think they might be a girly boy. The girls get uncomfortable and either spread out or huddle together in a corner opposite.
