How long do you want to ignore this user?
Howdy Ags,

Switched industries and just completed my first year as a Commercial Insurance Broker. I would love to work with Aggies so if anyone needs their business covered, I would appreciate the opportunity to earn your business.

Outside of business, any insight or tricks of the trade would be greatly appreciated as well.

I get called on a LOT by the brokers that service the Permian since I'm on I20 headed west from DFW. My suggestion is to make sure you don't automatically conflate the industry your target services with the risk profile of your target's company.

For example, we're a manufacturer. When I get brokers lauding their skill and experience in servicing the Permian, they go to the bottom of my list. Yeah, 95% of the time we sell to producers in the Permian but our risk profile has nothing to do with O&G. Maybe if we provided some type of field service but we don't and our website indicates as much.

Play the long game. I say no to N-1 of the commercial brokers that call on me every single year and I'll keep doing that every single year. Maintain relationships and don't take "no" personally.

If you find someone that you enjoy working with or calling on - stay close to them - not their company. They are going to change roles/jobs and it will be easier to gain business with their new company than it is to maintain business with their old company.

Be transparent as your brokerage will allow in pricing. I can't think of an example where I have continued doing business with a broker who I felt was dishonest in their fees.
