I have been at my current company for 9 years and love the people I work with, the suppliers I interact with daily, and overall, love the company as a whole. It has certainly been good to me in my time. But at this point it feels my time is coming to an end (my choice) as opportunities for any kind of advancement do not seem to be in the future for me or others on my team.

Ever since COVID, the company has pretty much been on a hiring freeze and has done a lot of silent hiring as positions have rarely been backfilled. Of the past 6 positions I have interviewed for over the past 5 years for internal advancement, 4 have been cancelled. The most recent being 3 weeks ago when the hiring manager called me to tell me prior to the email from HR going out. To make it worse, he informed me HR was working on an offer letter for me when he was notified the position was being cancelled. He did state he fought to keep the position open due to working on an offer, but was unsuccessful. Was that actually true or not? I will take him at his word. My boss did confirm the offer was real.

In addition, my boss put in his 2 weeks last Monday with tomorrow being his last day. I have been his de facto backup when he is out or when his schedule did not allow him to attend multiple meetings at the same time, so I thought maybe the previous position didn't happen for a reason. Since he announced it to the team, I have been working with him on a proper turnover so the team continues to run smoothly after his departure. He did meet with the VP on Monday to give him a turnover and his thoughts on the team, and I was identified as the one on the team most capable of taking it over.

I logged in this morning to find a meeting invite sent by the VP late last night to everyone on our team. I was expecting something like this to come before Friday to give us some kind of direction on next steps, which is what this was. During that meeting, he informed us the company is officially on a hiring freeze through at least January, and they would not be backfilling that role until the hiring freeze is lifted, and even when it is, he felt there was a 50:50 chance on whether or not it would get backfilled. There are apparently 2 more leaders on his team who have put in their notice as well that he is not confident he will be able to get backfilled. Totally deflating.

So, I feel it is time to begin to look elsewhere, and I got on at my current company via the Aggie Network, so hopefully it can assist me on my next adventure.

I have 15+ years experience in supply chain (both international and domestic) with the last 9 working more with the freight and fuel markets, as well as experience in sourcing via role responsibility. I live on the NE side of Houston (between 59/45/GP) and would like to target opportunities from The Woodlands into downtown, but am not opposed to opportunities elsewhere if remote/hybrid is an option.

Also growing up and living in Houston, I would love to get into O&G in some capacity. I feel a lot of my experience can translate into different industries.

That's tough. You probably stayed too long. At my age, I've learned that when you start getting passed for upward moves, or stop getting raises, then it's time to move on.

Best of luck to you!

Agree with this. It's better to be one of the first ones out than one of the last. With that said, good luck finding something. LinkedIn and indeed were the best resources when I was looking a few years ago.

Appreciate the feedback.

Yeah, I'm beginning to think I should have started looking when everything began opening up after COVID.

I still get good raises and really good bonuses. Money is not the issue. I am just ready to do something new. The VP did set up a one-on-one with me for Monday, so I am assuming I am about to get a bigger workload and also to talk about the future direction of the team (I have my thoughts).

I have been looking on LinkedIn and updating my resume. Tried on my suit last night and it is, uh, snug. Going to have to get that taken out or get a new one.
