I wanted to update my original post. The job description was a copy/paste from our website.

Education: The company may prefer these degrees but if you have any degree you will be looked at for the position. I myself, have an Animal Science degree and I have been working here for over 20 years and did not know one thing about the industry. So don't feel like you can't apply for the position just because you don't have a degree that is listed.

Experience: They prefer someone who has worked for an Energy company but it is not required. All the guys in our small office group have worked in various fields before this.

Work: We work in an office for 12 hours on night and day shift rotations. Similar to a DOW shift schedule. 4 days/3 nights/3 days/4 nights. Days off in between. After your rotation, you are off for 8 days. Hard work hours but very rewarding.

Benefits: Great Insurance. Great 401k match as well as a company-provided pension. Virtually no one offers pensions anymore.

Company: South Texas Electric Cooperative is a generation cooperative that supplies power to our member electric cooperatives. We cover power electric generation for 47 counties in Texas. From the edge of Houston to the Valley to the west of the San Antonio region.

This job is unique. Not very many people do it. That is why it makes it hard to find people for this type of work and why it pays so well in the long run. You can live in a rural area and have a great job at the same time. All you need to be a person that is a team player and willing to learn.

In this job, you will learn all types of electric generation - Wind, Solar, Batteries, Coal, and Natural Gas. You will learn about natural gas and energy trading. You will learn the ERCOT grid and how it works.

Are you wanting to try something new? This might be the place for you. Are you looking to get into the Energy Sector? This might be your chance.

Shoot me a reply if you have any questions.

I'm an engineer but am interested in transition to a career in nat gas/power. What is the expected compensation in a role like this?

I'm in Houston and see trading type roles on the commodities side but haven't seen many for end user power companies.

We do some energy trading in real-time as well as some day-ahead market trading. We purchase real power to cover the load in both markets along with providing power from our generators. This position is for real-time but we do help out with trades for the day-ahead market from time to time. Trading energy is very infrequent nowadays since the ERCOT market is mainly a day-ahead market.

If you are looking to trade a lot you would have to go to one of the bigger companies such as Calpine, Tenaska, Shell, NRG, etc. Also, there are Energy brokerage companies that trade energy all day.

On the natural gas side, we only buy gas for our power plants daily. We keep up with natural gas markets to buy at the optimal prices. As to companies that do trade daily. Some of the above energy companies do both natural gas and energy trading.

You will get experience with both and will learn trading but on an infrequent basis.

We do hire electric engineers from time to time if you still want to do that. Just keep watch on the "Career" page on the stec.org web page.

As to compensation. That is hard to say. I have been here for 23 years. Not sure what it is now. Starting pay would be based on experience or education. STEC is very competitive in the market now to keep good employees. I would say you will probably make about the same as an engineer here at STEC and it might be more. Also, compensation moves pretty quickly around here. I think this year we getting up to 4% cost of living raises as well as up to 4% performance raises. Not positive about it but pretty sure that is what it will be for this year.

Here is my email if you want to contact me further. jdonandrews@gmail.com
