Any tips for phone interviews? I prefer face to face but round 1 will be a phone interview. Just curious as to what to expect. Any info or tips greatly appreciated.

YMMV but My experience with phone interviews have typically been with an HR rep.

Be clear.

Have answers for the typical questions they usually ask.

STAR method.

Etc.

Just be prepared and do your research.

I will add on to this. Have a good idea in your mind about how long of time your answer is. You do not want to be too blunt and short, but you also don't want to ramble. It can be way more difficult to manage this on the phone since you can't see how the person is listening to you and responding with body language.

Clear and concise is key.

Occasionally smile when you talk. Without your body language to communicate your excitement for the position, I think it helps to add some positive energy to your voice to create the impression.

Just hope it is not a fake interview. Sometimes a score sheet has to be filled out. Do your best to guage the authenticity of the interview.

I find it helpful to walk around while on the phone during the interview. Probably not for everyone but it's a common practice!

Was going to post this. As someone in sales for over 10 years, smiling while talking on the phone is extremely important. You can hear the difference between someone smiling and not smiling.

Great advice. I do this too. It helps. I am in the market and I had a phone interview (initial screening) on Monday. I also move my hands and pretend I am talking to a real person, I think it makes my voice seem more realistic especially since they cannot see me.

Generally the first interview is always an HR rep to see if you really check the correct boxes. Sometimes you might get a 2nd call from the hiring manager before being invited onsite.
