I have two companies that I am in late stages with.

Let's call them "Preferred Company" and "Awesome Second Option Co."

I interviewed with my prospective manager at Preferred Co. just over a week ago. "I'll want you to come in and meet with the CEO, as well" is a direct quote from the interview.

The recruiter for this role had previously asked about any competing offers. My reply was that I have other late-stage convos, but there are no offers yet.

Since then, I've heard nothing.

Yesterday, I met w the CEO at Awesome Second Option Co., who asked me to send references in. Since then, they said they will check references and "get back to me in the coming days."

So, I anticipate Awesome Second Co will send an offer this week or early next.

My Question: Should I email Preferred Company and tell them that another organization asked me for references and is in the reference check process?

My thinking is that if I am their favored candidate I'd like to push them along as quickly as possible. This may also run the risk of them saying "we won't be able to move that fast" and dismiss me from their plans.

There is also the philosophy motivating them to **** or get off the pot.

The recruiter ain't getting paid if you are number 1 and you get a job elsewhere.

I would let the recruiter know you have an offer and assuming that preffered co has a competitive offer, they're the number one choice.

I don't know how many times I've gotten HMs and HR to get off the pot to make an offer.

As long as it's not an in house recruiter this is what I think would work best.

I've been recruiting for many many many years, (agency, inhouse, RPO) and I've never had someone lose out on an offer because they said this is the job I want.
People are lazy and they take the path of least resistance.

Just my $.02.

This is essentially why I asked the question.

Interestingly, it's an external recruiter who is functioning semi-internally right now while they build some systems.

Perhaps a message saying I have some other late-stage interviews that are getting scheduled and, since they had asked before about competing offers, I wanted to keep them updated. Then, ask "where are you in your process right now?"
