Has anyone had a full time remote job? I have always heard stories about remote opportunities but have never met anybody personally that has found something that pays well enough to live off of. Just curious if anybody has experience with this.

Yes, a lot of us on here work from home. Ive worked from home for a while now for 3 different companies, and I do pretty well for myself.

A lot of it depends on what you do. Project manager/coordinator types are remote pretty often, software implementation, etc. Work from home office unless you're on site. I loved it.

I'm a information security engineer and work from home. I would say the pay is pretty dang good. I don't see myself ever going back to an office.

Worked from home for almost 12 years now and make pretty good money. Work in strategy and love not commuting or dressing up for work every day.

Think I fill my gas tank up about once a month.

I work in recruiting and have worked from home for the last 12 years. My entire team works from home.

I'm work from home. Started 5 months ago. I do sometimes go in once/week strictly for some face-to-face meetings with my suppliers, but it's not a requirement.

I got a new job in March that is 100% remote. Project manager/implementation as mentioned above.

Only on site/travel occasionally (2-3times a year) and won't go back
To an office setting.

Software engineer, 100% remote since 2019. The income is more than I'll ever need. Haven't had a permanent residence since 2020.

I work remote for a bank. Live on Skype but it is better than commuting.

I appreciate all the replies. It looks like I've been talking to the wrong people. If anybody has any leads/recommendations for a remote opportunity it would be greatly appreciated. I currently commute an hour one way and I am looking at options. The majority of my professional career has been in education but I have experience in customer service and sales (automotive), team leadership, sports recruiting, budgeting, and fund raising.

The problem now though is that in the last 6 months or so, companies are requiring employees to come back. So any remote job has the highest competition.

How i got into software implementation was because I was considered a subject matter expert in my field and that's what they were looking for. Once they taught me the software they were selling, I was gold because i already knew the industry inside and out. If you can think of any specific area of those parts of your career that you could comfortably teach others, that'd be a good place to start. Your education background would also lend well towards training/implementation.

We are currently looking for a remote position for my wife. She is not an Ag, she graduated from WT A&M with a business degree. She was a lending assistant for 4 years and has now been the head of the mortgage department for a local bank the last two years. She was valedictorian or her HS class as well as Magna Cum Laude while working 40 hours a week at a bank.

Extremely smart and is very handy with computers as a user.

She is the most comfortable with banking but could be trained in any facet and perform highly within a short amount of time. If anyone had any realistic leads please point me in the right direction, please.

She should look at software development. Tons of remote opportunities in that space.

Do you do recruiting for software development?

My team does. What languages does she code in? How much experience? That being said, my client only hires engineering or CA degrees.

Not sure on the coding language she uses. She has a business degree from WT A&M. Currently working as the head of a mortgage department for a small local bank with 2 branches where we live in San Angelo.

When you say anything with a computer, do you mean as a user?

No she is not an engineer or CS major.

Sorry, I guess I should have worded that differently, she is extremely handy with a computer as a user. All I know is she was a 3x state champ in computer applications and she can figure out any computer issues that both our entire families come across.

For those looking for remote opportunities, its simple, just look on Indeed and Linkedin. Every remote opportunity will typically list it in the job title or job description.

Now, realistically getting a well paying remote job without having specialized/technical experience, is going to be very very difficult. It took me about 8-9 years before I started working remote.

Yea I think some people think theyre going to get this high paying job working remote for a big tech company or something, without any previous experience. Thats not how it works.

Not me but my wife is a Brand Manager for an Ad Agency and works remotely and loves it.

She has to travel for a few days 2-3 times a month to meet with clients though.

I've worked 100% remote for almost a decade. I can't imagine ever going back to working in an office. I enjoy a fantastic career working from a home office. I know I'm in a very unique situation as we have a 3 bedroom farmhouse on the farm that is dedicated office space.

I do get to travel for work. I was in AZ earlier this week and head to Portland next week and will spend a few weeks in Florida after the 1st of the year. And will head to Israel at some point in 2023 when I can fit it in. Not many people truly like traveling as much as I do, however, tonight for example, I was able to book a hotel for my wife and oldest son using strictly points. I'll be able to use points for a 2 week vacation in Florida if we can make it work with our busy schedules.

I work full remote for a commercial insurance company. I travel about once a month to visit clients.

The company pays for a three day get-together once a year. They bring 350 of us to a single spot. We visited San Diego back in June. Going to Rhode Island this coming June. I have co-workers from all over the US. I've been with the company a year and it's been great. I enjoy it much more than I anticipated.

Agreed with most responses that for a high paying remote job, you should work on establishing an expertise and "brand". From there it's not terribly difficult if you are in the right field.

Most consulting roles are remote outside of travel. Travel has reduced substantially (for most) since COVID. I am probably only on the road once a month if that.

How have you not met anybody with a decent paying remote job? Did you Rip Van Winkle through covid? Like 80% of back office, white collar roles are fully or majority remote these days (majority remote = 3-4 days remote and 1-2 in the office every week).

If you want one search for a role in product management; marketing; financial, business, or data analysis; or basically anything else that a business major does.

Great resource for finding remote opportunities is CareerShift.
It is located on HireAggies (accessible through the Career Tools link at aggienetwork.com)
Once on HireAggies look for the Resources link (top right of page)
Scroll to bottom of Resources page to CareerShift (routinely averages around 16 Million Postings)

Cybersecurity and fully remote. I'd actually like to go to an office a couple days a week. Work from home tends to turn into living where you work, imo.

Yep, my wife lucked into hers. She worked for a local, privately owned technology company that was purchased by one of the largest tech companies in the world. They transitioned her to hybrid then 100% remote. That was about 6 years ago. She's moved to a new team/segment in the company but still remote.

But, people act like its easy and every company out there has open remote positions. That's just not the case. And the majority of these opportunities know people will value remote work and they can pay them less.

I had a friend working for VROOM and was 100% remote. She eventually got tired of the pay cut, as well as some of the other negatives of the company, and move to a hybrid position at a new company making significantly more and (outside of the work from home) with significantly better benefits.

I disagree on the pay part. I've worked remote for 3 different companies before, during, and after covid. All 3 jobs paid the same or more as what I would have made working in an office. I see remote jobs posted all the time that pay a lot more than the office jobs I see posted.

What helps is being located in Texas and applying for remote jobs that have headquarters in NYC and California, the pay for those companies/jobs is going to be higher obviously.

As always, it depends.
