I'm looking to hire some students in BCS to do some work this fall. What's the going rate that will get people to show up on time and do a couple hours of work? $10/15/20/hr? It would probably be $400-600 worth of work spread across the fall.
Just trying to get an idea of what I should budget for this.

Depends. Are you hiring them to be gigolos?

If I'm a student I'm going to do the math on how much it's going to cost me in gas to get to the job... and I'm not working for one of those two hours per day just to get to the job and back. Good luck.

Oh. $20 an hour.

Edit: In cash.

This would be on campus if that makes a difference, so even $0 gas if you live on campus.

$20/hr cash is what my son's usually charge for odd jobs.

I'll have two boys there by the end of August. Send me a PM and I'll get you their contact info.

$17 an hour cash. $18 an hour booked.

They're right there, so it's convenient. They can walk to work.

Best wishes!

I don't have PMs but I will probably post here again with openings and contact information if I can get this all approved!

Times have changed in a really short period of time. In 2015 I was making $15/hour part time and that was considered solid.

Exactly why I wanted to ask. I did way worse jobs for $10/hr on stuff like that. But that also bought a bunch of $.25 pitchers at the Hall of Fame.

good luck with your endeavor.
Friend has a local business, starting pay 13 after trained 15 with lots of opportunities for extra cash by doing simple things. Training typically over a month but if you do the exercises and hours can be done in 2 weeks and get $500 bonus. All AC, reasonably flexible schedule, close central CS location. Think has has 4 people apply all summer, 3 offered, two accepted all said ya will do whatever it takes to get bonus, and did not. Pre covid post two positions 50 applicants, 20 interviews, hire both and maybe an extra in case. Now if any applicants, lucky to get any that you would consider hiring. Several employees average double their wages by doing the optional things, can make real money. Money does not seem to help.
Kids don't want to work and guess parents are okay with that. Guess since they are going to forgive student loans just borrow and deal with later. I was addicted to eating and sleeping with roof over head so I worked and paid for my school and housing

Son is looking for some work while going through RELLIS welding certifications, and maybe it would be a good job. At least until he found himself in a shop somewhere.

Master's ironworks is hiring in Bryan off of Fountain.

You act like this is some novel idea. Majority of people don't want to work either, hence why we require competitive pay and benefits.

But yeah, let's post a job for $7.25 and complain no one wants to work.

We pay our student workers $11 to be outside all day, bit they get 40 hours a week in the summer and up to 20 during the year.

Granted, our stuff looks good on a resume.

What company? One of my sons is going to CS to start his career in the trades (or other opportunties) may be interested.

If you would have bothered to read (i give you the benefit of the doubt that you can) the post indicated $13hr starting salary, and none of his employees have made $7.25 ever. Not only no takers, no applicants. People that do the extra things can easily make more than the manager.

my 15 year old referees soccer games at minimum $25 per game. With more experience, it gets up to $75. I have heard baseball umpires make good money too

EDIT to say I think there should be hazard pay involved for the way parents treat some of the kid refs sometimes, its sad.

"Extra things" as you're describing them do not sound good in a job posting. Make more of that pay guaranteed and you'll see more applicants.

Spoony if your kid ends up working at this place let us know after a few months why the guy can't keep employees. I'm sure there's a reason.

The guaranteed pay if far more than competitive for the job duties. Its not like earn extra money scrubbing the floor, its be nice to customers and ask them to review their experience and mention their (employee's) name on one of several social media sites. Really tough. The ones that are nice and ask typically get them to do it without much effort, just ask. And its not advertised, it just a bonus. Just like the one they get for completing the training, its big cash but employee can't open/close or work alone until its done.

Oh and about keeping employees, the number one reason they leave is "I am graduating". Number two is I'm going to Grad/Med/Vet school and I won't have time. He believes better not to hire duds so interview, trial period is rigorous and pretty sure he has not fired anyone, but passed on hiring hundreds.

Generally speaking, the timing of when you post the job is as important as the hourly wage, when it comes to hiring students for on campus jobs. That has been my experience hiring students for IT help desk jobs over the last 18 years.

We start our students at $12/hour and I suspect in the next FY that rate will increase at least $1, if not $2.

Best time to post jobs are a few weeks before each semester. I just hired 3 this morning. I might be posting another position soon.
