My son recently lost his job with an oil and gas surveying company in Tyler. Had to move back in with us and is expecting a child in February. Has applied here in College Station and all major Texas cities for entry level GIS jobs. Graduated in May of 19, got a great job in tyler and then was laid off due to Covid and the oil and gas decline. Any help or direction would be much appreciated.

Man that sucks. Was he with ELS? I'm a surveyor in the Tyler area, and I'm starting to feel the heat. I think all of the companies around here are struggling.

Yes he was with ELS. They have told him they would hire him back when things get back to normal. But how long will that be

For ELS it all depends on oil prices. From my understanding, O&G is all they do.

Is he interested in pursuing licensure?
I need a guy to replace an SIT that's moving out of state. Looking for someone who can flex in and out of the field.

While I don't have direct experience, I've been interested in pursuing this as a post O&G career.

For OP and anyone else interested, this is basically how I got my start in surveying. Was doing GIS work and a surveyor I knew talked me into making the switch. Did the field/office thing for a while and learned before moving to a bigger company and going full-time office. I'm licensed now, so I feel like it worked out well for me.

On this note....don't look at Texas' SIT requirements and feel like that is a legitimate path to licensure for everyone. The market is starving for SITs with ANY level of experience, even just adjacent experience. There's only about 300 Texas SITs that haven't already gotten their RPLS.

SIT certification is a math/Federal alphabet soup exam away through several other states. It's then transferrable to Texas.

Contact CUDE in San Antonio. They have surveying and have developed and maintain a large GIS interface in SA, Austin and Houston. It's called TarraVault.

Has he tried the public works industry? Doesn't pay as well as O&G but cities and counties are always collecting tax dollars and always spending it.
