Tell me about Schlumberger in Sugar Land. I have a potential opportunity there and I'm curious about a lot of the intangibles. How is the company weathering the downturn/recovery, from an employee perspective? How is morale? What are some of the pros and cons of working for Schlumberger? What is the culture like? What are the things you think prospective employees should know? What is the Sugar Land facility like in particular?

Thanks in advance, any insights are much appreciated.

Unless it's an executive role, don't do it. I worked for them for 8.5 years. You're a number and that's it. Benefits are marginal, pay is on the low side of medium, management is often inept with ZERO course of action to change it. No work life balance at all. I would not go back to SLB given the opportunity.

What is the position and with what division? What is your background in the oilfield?

I work at SLB currently, but I am at the facility on Rankin Rd. The office in Sugarland is the HQ and I don't make it done there very often. I actually try to stay away from there but that's because I am in sales. I was laid off back in the middle of 2016 but they brought me back late last year. From my side of things, the recovery has been going ok and we do see an increase in work.

Phideaux is correct that you are mainly just a number unless you are true SLB and they have moved you around the world for work. If you are willing to relocate(international), you have a much better chance to have staying power and move up the food chain. I feel like the benefits/insurance are pretty good. Management has been pretty bad but in my division, it does seem like they are trying to change and make things better. I have a great work like balance, but that it probably because I am in sales. I am not sure about other positions. I agree the pay could be better

From my understanding, you will be a minority if you are from the U.S. working in Sugarland because I think most of the employees there are from outside the U.S.

I enjoy what I do, but that probably has more to do with the people I work with on a daily basis.

Thanks for the feedback. I applied for a quality engineer position at the Sugar Land Technology Center, no division was specified. I have about 6 and a half years in oil and gas, first at Baker Hughes and currently at a mid-sized equipment manufacturer. I've worked at companies ranging in size from less than 100 people up to 66k people (BHI when I left) and I prefer the larger company environment, even if I am just a number, or the very small company environment. Baker Hughes offered lots of training opportunities and room to move up or around, which I really liked and haven't had access to at any of the smaller companies I've been at.

Phideaux, did you have a field job or an office/shop job? The impression that I've gotten from speaking to different people is that SLB field jobs are terrible, basically exactly like you described, but that the office and shop jobs are a lot better.

Thanks again for the feedback.

Do you have an email I can contact you at? There is a position at another company I think you might be interested in based on your user name and previous posts.

QFT

Both as an employee and later as a vendor dealing with management.

I was part of the Cameron purchase in 2016. We had several longtime legacy SLB people move into our office. The long timers had a completely different perspective of the company. One lady in particular whom I worked with very closely and had/have a lot of respect for would often tell me how she wishes I got to know the SLB she knows.

The primary reason I left was to take an opportunity into the midstream operator side of the business, a side I've long wanted to be a part of having worked as the OEM into that space.

The push that drove me to actively look for that opportunity was the overall lack of clear business focus. We were not legacy SLB and I don't think SLB was a cause of that lack in focus, but wasn't actively working to change and correct.

So I got an offer from SLB. The salary is a little lower than where I'd like to be and I'm working on negotiating that up, but the job also comes with a bonus of up to 20% and profit sharing up to 12%. The recruiter I'm working with assures me that I should get the full 20% bonus most years as long as I hit my goals, but I'm skeptical. Does this sound realistic or is the recruiter blowing smoke?
