Seeking advice on interview attire. I'm one to always say suit up for an interview, but this one is an outside sales position for building products to commercial construction companies. I will meeting with a manager and a district manager on the companies site. I'm thinking either a suit or suit with no tie.

Alway a suit and tie unless instructed otherwise. Better to be overdressed than underdressed.

I am in this exact industry and have interviewed many people for Outside Sales. I don't hold it against candidates that do not wear a suit, because it is a business casual industry. However, candidates stand out that wear a suit.

Wear the suit. Just make sure it fits right and you don't look like you are headed to the NFL Draft.

Suit and tie was my initial thoughts until my cousin (who works at same company) said no suit. But his interview was at happy hour at a bar, so I think that's make a big difference on what to wear.

I'm a recruiter, and I recently had a candidate show up to an interview for a very hands-on, mechanically oriented position wearing a suit. The hiring manager thought that was great; it made him stand out and showed his professionalism.

I used to wear a suit to work when many of my colleagues dressed business casual. They would rib me about it and ask me why I dressed up so much. My answer: If I'm the only one in the room wearing a suit, it still only takes me about thirty seconds to convince people that I grew up in a small town and have done my fair share of ditch digging and fence post pounding. On the other hand, if I'm the only one not wearing a suit, it is a much tougher up hill climb to get on the same level.

I think this depends on if you are already employed as a current outside salesman and when the interview is.

If it is at a time when you are not expected to be working or you don't currently have a job, then absolutely suit and tie.

The new outside sales job I have now I just wore slacks and dress shirts because it was a lunch interview and I was coming from customers.

It's not always cut and dry but most scenarios call for a suit and tie

For me, it depends on the position and company. Typically, I am a boots/slacks/button down/jacket person. I don't do ties and suits but I will if I feel like the position/company warrants it. I'm not comfortable in them and it shows during an interview. You just need to know the position and the company and make a good judgement call. Over dressed or under dressed both tell me the exact same thing...that little effort was made for research.

Thats my opinion and its based on my belief that I should be able to sell myself without looking like a suit goon, and also my first professional job was landed with zero experience and with boots, slacks, and a button down...no suit...no tie.
