Gents --

I've been working for a major service company for a while now and I'm looking to move on. I've worked in Asia, Africa and currently in the Gulf doing managed pressure drilling operations.

I was wondering if anyone has any contacts with the performance development coordinators with Halliburton's baroid segment. I made a contact who forwarded my resume to their office and I'd like to see if there're any Ags who can give me some gouge regarding timetables and what specifically they're looking for in an entry level drilling fluids engineer.

If there are any other opportunities to get into a mud school out there, I'll work anywhere. I'm coming up on 2 years in O&G and I'm very flexible on pay/rotation/location.

E-mail is in my profile if you can't PM me. Thanks/gig 'em.

Wow. That's pretty helpful.

Not sure where to start, though.

Ditka,

Are you still in the SA area? If so, have you seen any traction in starting up an Ags-in-Energy type endeavor here?
Old Army Metal

I am still in SA. I've been supposed to leave for a rig in the gulf "any day now" for like 3 weeks now.

All I've seen is the thread on the SA board. Like I said there, I'd be very open to whatever we need to do to get that going. No reason that San Antonio should have a thriving group of Ags in O&G.

Why do you want to be a mud engineer? The entry level pay will probably be a lot less than what you are making.

Those names and positions are probably a decade out of date.

You might be thinking of mud loggers. Or you overestimate how much I'm making. Either way, the number quoted to me by the contact I made was about the same as I am currently making.

And besides, it's not about the money at this point. It's about stability and the opportunity for professional development, two things I'm not getting from my current employer.

I know what a mud engineer is. I would guess they'd start you out at around $5k/month, seems to me a two year MPD hand ought to be making much more than that.

Dates are on there of last update. May not all be correct but what you got?
KT_Ag08

None that I see are correct. The PSL VP you have is the COO and as of 4 years ago was the VP of BD. Northern Region Manager you gave there hasn't been Northern Region manager since before Summer of 2010.

Southern Region Manager is David Reed. PSL HR is Jacob Bradshaw. Global HR Manager is Erin Davis. Earl Chauvin is global SBM for the PSL. Start with Bradshaw. He will get you the global recruiter for the PSL who will in turn put you in touch with the local PDCs.

Your list - it is no good.

Ditka,
To answer your original question, the necessary qualifications to be a mud engineer aren't really tough. Like many oil patch jobs turnover is high so they will want someone who is reliable and hardworking. Your previous experience is a plus because of your knowledge of drilling operations and your familiarity with the lifestyle. If you will be working onshore then you will likely spend most of your time alone driving rig to rig, so time management and attention to detail is important.
Where is your contact? Is is a PDC? It might be a good idea to just call the guy and introduce yourself. Maybe invite him to lunch. I wouldn't waste my time trying to contact one of those big wigs.
Finally, why Baroid? I'm assuming that your work for one of the larger service companies with their own fluids division, why not transfer?

Yeah, seems that way to me, too. But the $$$ isn't really there. I could get a regular job where I didn't have to leave for months on end pretty easily for what I'm making now.

I have the name of the PDC who has my resume in Houston. I'm not sure if trying to make direct contact is a good or a bad idea. Any advice would be appreciated.

That's also an option available to me. It's a little tougher though, because my segment is pretty small; even so, we're undermanned. It's unlikely that I'd get any cooperation from my current segment if I expressed a desire to transfer.

Well that escalated quickly. Thanks in part to you guys, I have an interview with their South Texas division tomorrow.

What do y'all think? Suit? Nice jeans and boots? I was thinking of just going with the suit for this one.

Khaki pants, button down, and boots. Leave the wore out muddy steel toes at home. I'd wear a nice jacket if it's cold. You'll be slightly overdressed, but that's just right. Trust me.
tukAg10

Yes nice boots is what I meant. I hope you wouldnt wear old muddy crap stained field boots to an interview.

Went really well. Comfortable interview. We'll find out how the guys on the other side of the table felt about it in a couple of weeks but I'm pretty confident.

Nice facility they have down there, though. Never been to that part of town before.
