HireRight is the 3rd party doing the background checks for a major oil company that just offered me. They want W2s from high school job. That was 10 years ago and completely unrelated to this job I got offered for. Are they always this intense?

Do they expect you to keep up with all that crap.
That's probably more on your employer... Or something could have flagged you? Don't know but my current company used hire right and it was simple

I'm thinking the same thing. My company used HireRight and it was an effortless process for me.
The company called me today and said they might push my start date a week. They said the process usually takes about 6-8 weeks to complete. I would have thought they'd check my reference during the decision making process to offer me not after. It seems really insufficient.
I manage our corporate background check vendor/account (big-box retail) and 6-8 weeks is rediculous. Not sure what all services/searches they are using, but that is an utterly stupid amount of time. It takes ours a week on average to return corporate hire results.

I have worked for major corporations and state government and I've never had to supply anything for a background check that's crazy. Hell the government job only took two weeks to do a background.
The job is with ExxonMobil and I spoke to my HR rep about this and she spoke with HireRight and basically it's not an issue now.
i had the same deal. they asked me for stuff from long ago, i said i didn't have it, and it wasn't a big deal.
HireRight is bad.
