Valverde, If your looking for an MWD job it shouldn't be too tough. I know companies like Pathfinder, Crescent, Ryan, and GyroData are all hiring. Along with all the big boys (Schlumberger, Weatherford, Haliburton, Baker Hughes). Check out oilgrads.com they have tons of field engineer postings. With the demand for FE's right now you shouldn't have to go mobile unless you just really want to.

galvin04 - Thanks a lot for the info.

I have applied at all the big boys so will check out the other companies you mentioned as well. Just waiting to hear back from one of them thats the tough part with the applying process. They all say they are hiring but contacts are limited so have yet to hear from one of them.

Any advice for applying for FE jobs? Any contacts at any of these companies?

Thanks again for the info.

valverde,

Just because it's not one of the big services companies doesn't mean they are a mom and pop organization. They're still very well run and successful businesses with over 1,000 employees.

Shoot me an email and I can give you a contact. matt.galvin08@gmail.com

I have a question about breaking into O&G. First, all I have is a BA, but I have 20 years management experience all of which has been on hand, first in food service and now in manufacturing. I've worn many hats in that time, handling purshasing, human resources, profile and loss, etc. I also handle sales and have good tech familiarity with the hand tools my company produces. I find myself trapped more and more behind a desk, and would enjoy field work. How does someone like me break in.

I work for Halliburton too, and I think it is a great company. The talk about "average pay and great benefits" is defintely spot on for entry level positions but it seems like most everyone I work with have been with Halliburton for years and they make damn good money now.

I was very lucky to get into a Field Associate Program that was mostly field work with a few training classes scattered in between. The concept of the program was very good and it was a great experience but the end result, which started out as moving to a BD role, eventually moved to being a Service Supervisor Role. I did not want to stay in the field for that long as I felt like BD/Sales was a better fit for me.

I was only in the program for about a year until I was able to transfer to another position within the company as a Technical Services Rep, basically sales support and PM type work. I love my new job as it is a blend between PM and Sales.

The only problem I saw with the hiring process is the pace of it. It is very slow and it sometimes takes months to hear back form people. It is best to know someone already with the company or someone that does a lot of business with Halliburton to help the hiring process along.

If you can, stick with the slow process, and continue to emial the people on the job description page and/or whoever you interviewed with, as these people are very busy and sometimes it takes a while for them to get back to you if you do not stay in their ear.

Good luck!

i have been doing MWD work for about 4 months now... I work mostly in the panhandle and work for Styker Energy Services. The pay is great for a first job out of college.. My degree was supply chain mgmt and i didnt have any luck finding a job in that area. The job can be boring alot of the time but the pay is great.. it isnt something i want to do all my life but Im happy doing it for a few year while im young.

Another way to get into MWD is to get hired on as a Logger for a few months then transition to MWD, I work for Horizon and got offered by Schlumberger a few days ago and will be working for them by the end of the month, I will still be doing for Logging for a little bit but I told them I am looking to transition to FE or MWD quickly and they said as long as I perform it will happen soon. I graduated Aug. '11 and have a wildlife mgnt degree.

I recently applied to a job at HAL for MWD. I applied through Halliburton's website and I have a friend who works out of the same office this job was posted and he talked to his boss and forwarded my resume along as well.

I graduated in 05 w/ degree in Chemistry and have 4 yr work experience in manufacturing and 2 yr experience in construction. Any ideas on how this may work out? I only applied end of last week so I havent heard anything yet.

AggieBaker, I am currently a senior graduating in May and am very interested in learning more about Halliburton's field associate program. Is there anyone that I could contact that would be able to provide more info on the recruiting and interview process for that program?

I just started with HAL, I will be on a frac crew in Odessa. It sounds like AggieBaker is talking about the SSIT program which they did away with a few months ago. The have a new program set up similar to the SSIT but I don't think you can come straight into it. You have to earn a spot into it through your performance in the field. Once you are in the program you can become a supervisor within 1.5 to 2 years. You don't have to have a degree to get in either, but it helps.

AggieBaker, like you I don't have a lot of interest staying in the field and becoming a supervisor. I would love to hear more details about the transition that you made.

The new program is the FOP program. It is specifically for degreed individuals that did not earn an engineering degree but still have an interest in working in the field. You are hired straight into that program though there have been a few folks that have transitioned from OA roles into the FOP program if they met the criteria for the program.

We had a meeting about it a few weeks ago. It is the FOP program. Most of us were told when we were hired that we would be in a fast track program, I'm sure they were talking about the FOP.

The meeting in a nutshell explained the difference between the FOP and SSIT programs, explained how we can get into the FOP program. The supervisor used the phrasing "getting noticed in the field" will get you in. There are about 6 of us that came on at the same time with degrees and none of us have been put into it yet. I am on the verge of finishing training and will be on location mid October. I am looking forward to talking to my field supervisor about it once I get out to Odessa, right now my only contact has been the FDIC.

MVB 8th Ag, I just went to a job fair and the Halliburton reps talked about the FOP program. They said they aren't taking new FOPs until the summer 13, so... did you make it into the program yet? I am curious because I will likely have to 'get noticed in the field' as well.

Not in the program. I dont think being a supervisor is the path im going to take. Im actually trying to make it back to dfw to get closer to home and I don't really want to work out of Alvarado (HALs dfw yard)

Them not accepting applicants till the summer sounds about right. IMO you don't need to be in the program to become a supervisor in two years. If you start as a hand with a degree and 1) come out here wanting to learn ie not being content to be a button pusher just earning a paycheck, and 2) not afraid to sweat/ get your hands dirty, you will move up just as fast as someone in the program. We have someone on our core that is in the program, another guy who isn't just made supervisor, they have been working for roughly the same time frame.

Thank you for the information, that makes sense you could work your way up either way. What things make you not want the supervisor path (pitfalls trade/offs). Whats a HALs? (I'm looking at Eagle shale ford region here in San Antonio) Hope you get transfered to something closer to DFW
