Can anyone give insight into this program?

I am interested in learning more about the hours, pay, length of training, opportunities for advancement, etc...

Any help is appreciated.

Are you sold on HEB, the grocery industry or are you open to other retail management opportunities?

Definitely open to other opportunities. The reason why I asked about the HEB program is because I have a little insight into their culture and work environment. I worked there during high school, but never really asked too many questions about the management training program at that time.

If you are referring to the School of Retail Leadership program, it's a pretty good deal. The program lasts about 2 years, and you train in different departments during this time. They tend to shift you around from store to store, so you will spend a few months at one store to master the central checkout, and then go to another store to learn about the grocery department, and so on. Im pretty sure you get a raise everytime you master a department. A downside is they tend to work you nights and weekends. When you graduate from the program you become an Assistant Store Director, and from there can progress to Store Director, and then Unit Director. I've been with HEB for 5 years and currently work as a bookkeeper, and I think its a great company and environment.

Why did they hate their jobs?

My friend did not have a good experience in the SORL (School of Retail Leadership) program. They work at least 50 hours weeks, but if you talk to their HR people they realistically work you 55-60 hours a week. Pay is pretty good though.

My friend had a work related injury which put him out for a couple of weeks and they gave him hell for it.

There are good and bad managers and he just happened to be under some baaad management.

My wife has wen through both the SORM and SORL programs and is high in the HEB chain. The job pays well, but is very stressful and can demand long hours.

HEB is a great company with great people. I quit SORL after 2 years and got a better offer with a different company. Bottom line, make sure you really want to work in retail the rest of your life. Dealing with the public and working long hours on your feat can be very exhausting. Remember you will be working most holidays as well.

My father is an HEB unit director and he loves his job. I will also say that the pay is pretty good as well. If you work in one of the more profitable stores in the company, you will make over $140k per year as a unit director after bonus.

The only bad thing about grocery is the fact that you will work during the holidays. That is when a grocery store does the most business.

If you like your job, the holidays is not that big of a deal. I have a good friend who is the store manager of the Kroger at Rock Prarie in College Station. He works 50+ hours per week, but he loves his job.
