How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm starting at A&M in the fall, and I'm thinking of taking:

HIST 105
ENGL 203
MLSC 121
BOTN 101

That's only 12 hours, though, so I may end up adding another course (but I'll be a fish BQ, so I don't want too many hours...)

How's it look?

FYI, History 105 and 106 are insanely easy to CLEP out of if you've had decent history teachers in high school. It's nice to get them out of the way and move on to more interesting/important classes, but you can keep them on your schedule for GPA boosting if you need it.

Oh, and if you're asking for schedule help, you might want to post your major. It helps in figuring out what would be useful to you.

Post your major and any classes/hours you will be coming in with and we can help.

I'm an American Studies major

I'll have ENGL 104 and POLS 206 credit from AP, in addition to POLS 207 that I started at a CC today.

I've been browsing pickaprof, but it looks as if I may end up with Bickham for HIST. I'll look over the CLEP material and see if i want to give that a shot...I'm already going to try to CLEP SOCI 107

Anyone have experience with BOTN or any other science they'd reccommend? I haven't had a decent science teacher since fish year of HS so I'm looking for a fairly easy one.

Thanks for the help

I would take your english classes in summer school. I hate english though.

Take your basics at CC, its not worth taking those classes at A&M when you can take them at CC for much cheaper. I would take as many history and english classes at CC, then just worry about your upper level and major courses at A&M. Do not take summer classes at A&M, too expensive and most classes are taught by TA's. I think you can transfer up to 45 hours of CC credits towards you ring, take full advantage of this, CC is much cheaper and easier. Take some classes at Blinn if you can, these are just my opinions, but I would have taken more community college classes if I could, would have saved alot of money.

Info for clep tests. They're easy enough, but get yourself familiar with the test formats before taking it. The college board website has some reading packets you can download for each test, for about 10 bucks I think. It's worth it, since the packet contains a lot of things that will show up on the actual test.

I'm already wishing I'd done more CC, and I'm not even to A&M yet. There's still ENGL and HIST courses I could take at CC even if I take the schedule I posted for the fall.

I'm just having trouble keeping my schedule from getting too reading intensive...If I could I'd take SOCI, POLS, and ENGL all at once, but those all require reading.

ATMO 201 is fairly easy. I made a B in it but, then again I sleeped through most of the classes. I was a science major and didn't care about putting too much effort into this class. I could have made an A if I did put effort into it.

No you won't. Welcome to college and Texas A&M. You're the low man right now and your first year will be filled with crappy times and profs you didn't want because that is all that will be open. You may get lucky and get a prof and a time slot that you wanted, but that will be rare until you become a U3 or U4. Good luck, and welcome to Aggieland.

I always got the profs and times I wanted. Open registration has always been very good to me. Of course now, I don't even have to think when I register because there is only one prof/one time.

During the first week of class and the week before, people change their schedules and drop classes. Keep an eye out for an open spot and you should get any class you want.

IIRC, the requirement is 45 hours from A&M and the other 50 hours can be from anywhere. Of course, they just had to lower the A&M hours requirement after I got my ring.

HIST 105 did not boost my GPA. If only I had scored 3 points higher on one of the exams.

But POLS 207 and ECON 202 were good GPA boosters for me.

Take Hort 201 with Reed instead of BOTN.
Easy A, all memorization.

I'm trying to do my core curriculum requirements...so I have to choose from:

BIOL 111
BOTN 101
CHEM 101
CHEM 103/113
CHEM 107
GEOL 101
PHYS 201
PHYS 218
ZOOL 107

for one of the courses. The other hours of it should be easy to get, because there's fun stuff like OCNG and others to choose from. But that list just scares me, because I don't like science at all...

Is CC science out of the question?
Karrde

If you're afraid of science, scratch CHEM 107 and PHYS 218 from that list, those are both engineering classes.

Honestly, I think PHYS 201 sounds incredibly easy. Then again, I'm an aerospace engineering major. SAT II Physics actually gives you credit for that class, so I have that on my transcript even though 201 doesn't count for engineers.

Musicalaggie, I tool OCNG here at A&M, pretty easy class, lab is a breeze. To tell you the truch it's more of a geography class than a science class IMO. Also I took ZOOL and BOTN at a junior college, its pretty easy, I would take BOTN, seemed a little easier.

I took GEOL 101 with Spang. Very boring, but not too hard to get an A if you try. Dr. Spang is a very good prof.

I also took OCNG honors and thought it was a b****. Possibly more boring than GEOL and Vastano wasn't as effective as Spang was. I squeaked by with an A. A B is pretty to get in OCNG though.

If you don't like Science, take Geology and possibly even OCNG (generally easier than GEOL) at CC. It will transfer over fully. People talk about saving money, and yes that is important, but what is most important IMO is being strategic about taking classes at A&M that will boost your GPA at A&M and taking classes at CC/CLEP'ing out of classes that you don't think you will do well in (avoiding the GPA hit)..

To make the decision (how you will do in that class), factor in two things:
1. Historical grade scale and comments posted for that class and prof in particular.. For example, if one Prof is much easier, but is full- it may be worth putting off if possible to get him/her at a later semester.. [http://www.pickaprof.com]
2. What you are good or bad at.. If you are planning on being a liberal arts major and hate science.. the science/math classes are the ones you should be looking to take at CC/Clep out of- balancing that with #1..

^True.. although the comments from previous students make Pickaprof worth the 5 bucks a semester IMO. But, a good option regardless.

Credit hours are a lie, especially if you're taking labs. You can get a better picture by counting class hours. These are listed in the catalog.

HIST 105: 3 hours
ENGL 203: 3 hours
MLSC 121: 4 hours (but only 2 credit hours)
BOTN 101: 6 hours (but only 4 credit hours)

That's 16 class hours. If you take another class, it should be something light, like KINE 199.

Take GEOS 410 - Global Change (we basically discussed global warming for 18 weeks.) (4) 2-page papers and a presentation at the end of the semester based on those papers.

Aston makes a good point, you have to juggle the cost with trying to increase your GPA at A&M, to me the cost of school is more important in my case because it never fails that I come up about a $1,000 short each semester and have to find some money somehow for school, so to me the cost of school is more important factor for taking CC classes. Just try to determine which is more important for you and then base your decision off of that.

Thanks for the advice. I registered today, and couldn't get into OCNG, so I delayed taking science. I'm taking these next year:

ANTH 205
HIST 106 (Krammer)
KINE 199 (Aggie Band)
MLSC 121 (Anthony)
PSYC 107 (Young)
CAEN 289
---------
13 hours, and I managed to end up with only one class (PSYC) on Wednesdays and Fridays.

ANTH 205 isn't hard, if I remember correctly there was a ton of reading though, it's a good first schedule, if there was a class you couldn't get, just wait after the first day of class is over, classes get dropped all the time the first 2 days.

Don't forget to check the location of your classes. Make sure you can have enough time in between to get to them on time.

Some advice to add to that you've already gotten: Don't take physics your fish year and only take it at A&M if you can get Ford. 12 hours your first semester is probably a good place to start, don't overdo it until you're comfortable with the changes. I started with 12 and then added as I got comfortable, switched majors, and still graduted only a semester late...don't push yourself right off the bat or you're burn out quickly.
