This just popped up on LinkedIn from TAMU-Galveston, and I was surprised:

As part of the ongoing organizational review, we need your response to this survey to rank and provide feedback on the proposed names for the new school! These names come directly from the recommendations provided by the community teams.

Is TAMU-G getting a new college/school? Is TAMU-G getting renamed?

This was all news to me...

I don't think either is true. This is just a survey of SeaAgs to get their views. Remember Kathy Baker did the same for CS.

Your feedback revealed a vision to solidify a new identity and clearly define what Galveston offers. As a result, we will establish a new marine and maritime school at Texas A&M University that uniquely positions the marine and maritime disciplines at the forefront of "blue" scholarship, education, research and professional development. The formal name of the new school is an immense opportunity for branding and marketing, and will be determined through the implementation process described below. The new school will be complemented by the Department of Oceanography, which will remain in College Station as part of the College of Arts and Sciences, but also will be expanded to include a presence in Galveston. I will work with The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents and Higher Education Coordinating Board to bring this idea to fruition.

It's really all about trying to get Galveston seen as more connected to College Station by making it a College as opposed to a separate University. Part of it is administrative but it's also branding. It's a positive step as many see Galveston and they assume it is the same as Corpus or the other System schools when it is really part of TAMU CS. You don't have to apply for admission for instance to transfer, you just change majors and have to be accepted into the College just like you were changing majors in CS.

It's really simple: Texas A&M - South Campus.

Once Galveston is in the name, it sounds like a separate school.

What they want to do is make it a College, for instance the "College of Marine,Maritime, and Coastal Studies" or "College of the Seas". Technically they don't have a Dean for instance and the programs don't fall under a College like the rest of the Colleges at CS (College of Engineering, College of Business, etc.) It's designed to make it less confusing as to how Galveston is different from the other Universities under the System and that it truly is a branch of CS. The official name will remain "Texas A&M University at Galveston".
