I am a senior at Murray State University (passed on A&M for an ex gf, trying to fix that mistake lol)

We have a very good occupational safety and health degree, possibly the best in the country but:

1) I'm ready to get out of western Kentucky
2) 90% chance ill be working in the Houston area after graduation.
3) I want to finish my masters, but not before I enter the job market.

I know that both of my internships sent our plant fire departments to the promised land for training, and I was wondering what degrees are offered in related fields? I browsed the website, but I mostly found the university's actice safety department, not a degree program.

I'd really like to go to TAMU in BCS preferrably, and graduate out of my legacy/t shirt status.

I know not to expect a lot from the zoo, but if anyone can help it's be greatly appreciated!

Thanks and Gig Em

I'm sure there is some safety discipline/emphasis in the College of Engineering...

If you can keep a nuclear reactor safe, you can keep anything safe.

i took a safety engineering class and only passed in one group assignment written by a group from the previous year. we changed it up some but might have spent a total of 4 hours total the whole semester working on it. we all got an A for the course. by far, the easiest A I ever got.

You could go for the Master's in Public Service and Administration at the Bush School. They have some concentrations related to safety/security:

COE has a process safety program. It's a PhD and or Masters Program.

Edit for "has" not "had".

I went to Murray State after community for in state tuition, the program, and because I was young, dumb, and thought we were going to get married. Is that specific enough for you?

Degree doesn't really matter if you get the professional certs or go thru something like the TEEX CSHO coursework or find some way to get related work experience.

I did Rangeland Ecology with Environmental Science emphasis in school but do mostly safety stuff now for an offshore drilling contractor (write safety cases, do audits, process safety, develop and implement the HSE Management System, etc.) Best thing to do in school is find an oil company who offers a co-op program in HSE, I did mine with Marathon Oil.

Edit: if you want to work internationally, the NEBOSH cert is a good thing to get.

Half, if not most, of a HSE job is interpreting safety regulations and then informing your company of the cost of not complying.

I think if a university created a degree to interpret govt regulations and then apply them to an operation, it would be a hot commodity.

I work in the health and safety field, and unless you are going into a specific field (ie oil and gas) that you know requires a masters degree, having a masters degree in health and safety is not a smart move in my opinion. You would be better off getting a MBA and a CSP (certified safety professional). Just my two cents though.

The sprh program posted above is good for occupatinal health and safety. Ive hired several students. Good support from oil and gas and other manufacturing companies in the state.

If you are stupid enough to follow a girl instead of going to the college you wanted to go to, then you deserve to stay in Kentucky.

I would recommend an MBA. It's very broad, widely applicable, and built to fit into every industry from military to safety to account variances

I assumed the thread was about degrees related to playing safety, in which case I was going to suggest Poultry Science or Ag Leadership Development.

A&M has strong Safety Engineering curriculum and the folks coming out of the Mary Kay O'Connor Process Safety Center typically have internships and six figure salaries lined up before they graduate and they do real process safety not telling people how not to comply with laws. Contact MKOPSC and ignore the cynics.

wrong forum

use the internet or call the school...

show a little initiative instead of wanting people to do all the work for you...

The COSC department used to have a masters program that specialized in safety. One of my grad teachers when I was there was big into it and tried to get everybody to follow suit.

I'm guessing an MS in Safety Engineering probably has a pretty good emphasis on safety.

I know 3 ppl with the MPH with this concentration. All 3 were hired before graduating & started upon graduation. Companies such as BP & Chevron recruit out of that major.

Edit:

Source - my MHA is from A&M's HSC SRPH & I had to take the intro class for that major. Met some ppl who got the degree. Also @ our SRPH graduation they read your after grad/job plans. 85% of the MPH EOH folks were headed to work for oil & gas companies. Seems like a great program.

Have a few moments to chat via email/phone about your experience with the SRPH program?

I'm researching the MPH - Environmental with emphasis in Occ. Health, and have a few questions about the program that might not be answered by the faculty.

What intro class are you referring to?
