I found this under Auburns handbook and breathed a huge sigh of relief. " Grades earned in undergraduate or professional courses do not count in the calculation of the GGPA"

Wtf is patch writing. I'd appeal appeal appeal.

The undergrad prof scanned in your paper ad then ran it through a computer program, that is hardly enough evidence to fail you on the paper. if they had solid evidence you'd fail the class. I'd be fighting this tooth and nail.

Unles you legitamitly plagiarized.

Patch writing isn't plagiarizm. It is similar. Instead of copying word for wword, you borrow heavily the style and language, but don't cite the person you borrowed from. Sounds like the OP is admitting he did that.

As someone who taught English in college and high school for many years, I have never heard the term "patch" writing.

I am also not accusing anyone of anything.

However, to borrow the style, language, and/or content of a passage--even if you make minor changes--without citing the original source is in fact plagiarism.

I've been curious what the statistical odds of two different individuals, writing on the same topic, independently crafting very similar langauge because the overall choices of material to use are limited by the topic and because writing styles for various conditions are themselves formulaic based on academic instruction?

It seems to me that unless the material is very long and involved, given enough repetiton, that two individuals may independently write similar statements about the same topic.

Programs like turnitin.com, safe assign, etc. are very thorough. The only time I have ever seen high percentages of similarity between papers/articles have come when there was either students-copying-students or copy-and-paste papers. Not sure how it is at TAMU as I was only a student there, but at CSU we pretty much ignore anything below 17-20% due to that percentage coming from similar topics in large classes.

We use Turnitin and I only care when the student provides no references AND the passage is verbatim or close to it.

If references, then it better be in quotes and at most a sentence or two.

I have had a few >95% similarity ratings, but all except one were from students that took the class over and resubmitted the same paper. The one was directly from a web site.

i got everything under control. Everyone knows it wasn't intentional. Its just part of a learning process, and for the record everything was cited.

I had a class where the prof took off a percentage of the grade based off of the similarity grade. Our paper had an 8% similarity to it so he took our grade of 94 and took off an additional 8%. I took a closer look at the similarity parts and Turnitin counted the title page and contract language that had been asked to be put in (it was a technical memo on a Request for Proposal). It even counted internet links as part of the similarity. We appealed to the professor and only took of 1 or 2%.

Don't get me wrong. I did horrible on the assignment. (30/90) . However everyone my committee and professor who gave me the grade knows it wasn't intentioNal. and I can still get a C in the class. (Not good for grad school. However it was in an undergrad technical writing class which will show up on my transcript but wont count towards gpa or to determine retention so I'm good)

Marsuvees - that sucks you had to got through that. It is definitely lazy of the grader to not even look at the sim report.

I would say most of those under 15% sim rating include info like you had. After that, if it is in the body then you have to start figuring how egregious is the offense.

I had a grad advisee that flunked a paper simply because her prof took the similarity rating and applied it to her grade, sans looking at the report. Lazy. It is not like grad classes are in the hundreds, so the time wasted is minimal.

Marsuvees,

Did that happen to be an info 465 class?

We just turned in our group project, and the professor stated he would do the exact same thing
