So I am currently in General Studies trying to get into May's next fall. I have signed up for ACCT 229(Knoop), MGMT 211(Swim), INFO 210 (Smatt), and ECON 203 (Peng) for Spring semester, total of 12 hours. Everyone I have talked to said that taking Management and Accounting together would be insane, yet my advisor claims that I should be alright since I am taking only 12 hours. What do you guys think? Any comments/advice with the profs I have? Any help would be greatly appreciated...TIA

Swim is one of those guys who has these wacky tests. Really, they're ridiculous. Lots of people feel they gotta kiss his ass to pass too. Read the book three times (he wrote it). Majored in bio or zoology or something, became a lawyer, go figure.

If by Peng you mean Xiasong Peng, then good luck. Had that guy for INFO 364 and could only understand every tenth word. Nice guy, commuted from Houston to teach twice a week, but hard to understand.

Knoop is a great teacher. Probably the best for 229. That being said, it is not an easy class in the least. Swim's class is also rather difficult. I slipped by with a very low C in both of those classes when I took them together. Don't take them if you're trying to boost your GPA to get into Mays.

If you want to do well in them, I'd advise going to the 4.0 and go tutoring sessions. They do a great job in both classes. Oh and go to the sessions for the first test in mgmt. I made the mistake of not doing it the first test and tried to play catch up the whole semester. The guy at 4.0 knows his stuff very well and gives you a huge packet of stuff to help you study better.

Be prepared for ACCT 229 and MGMT 211 tests on the same day. I remember a lot of people complaining about that last fall when I took it in '10.

Good thing you have Smatt. Her test averages were so high and other professors were so low that they forced all INFO 210 classes to have a standardized test. Her averages were still consistently higher than the other profs. She can be a little scary at times but she is really a nice lady at heart.

Also about 4.0. Mark will go through the notes that Swim went over in class, but is a little more nuanced with it, plus hands out packets of just the court cases listed on it. I think for the second exam, there were about 600 practice problems that Mark handed out. They are extremely helpful and the examples he gives are more clear than Swim's. Swim is an excellent teacher, but it is easy to miss stuff in his class. I always enjoyed lecture, just Mark will go a little more nuanced and help explain how Swim will test. You can know the material backwards and forwards and still fail because of the way Swim does his exams. Mark helps with that.

I just finished taking Acct 230 and Mgmt 211 this fall and got A's in both. For mgmt, yes it is hard as everyone knows. It's not impossible by any means. I just read the book very thuroughly and studied a couple of days before the tests and I made an A. As for Acct 229 that depends on the person. I thought it was easier than 230 so it really just depends on the person. I would say anyone with a somewhat decent work ethic and takes time to study will pass both together.

I dont think you should have too much of a problem with those classes together, it just depends on where your strengths lie, and if you are thinking of mays than those classes should be right up your wheelhouse. I know Blinn College is dif than A&M but I took ACCT230,MGMT211, ECON202,ECON203, and HIST104 all during Spring of 2011 and got A's in all of them. So dont be scared...

MGMT 211 is an overrated and overhyped class in terms of difficulty. Read the book and you'll be fine.

Thanks for the advice! I think I am going to stick with my schedule and take both at the same time. O

One of my biggest pet peeves is people trying to get an easy schedule so they're "guaranteed" a good GPA. Life is no where close to this. However, this is why I'm probably a few points off from my peers (along with a job on top of that.)

I'm glad to see you stick it out. I promise it will pay off JR/SR year when you take 3 or 4 difficult classes.

This.

Swim's MGMT class is not "easy" by any means, but I feel that many people make it out to be this crazy beast that is impossible. Go to lecture and read the book and go to tutoring at 4.0 if you need to.

But going to lecture is critical. He will often have material that was strictly covered in class on the exam. Plus you'll probably find that Swim is probably the best lecturer in Mays. I always looked forward to his classes because they were really interesting. Good luck!

I did both and ended up with a 3.8 for that semester. It can be done.
