One of my neighbors has a daughter that is applying for this scholarship at A&M and I just wanted to see if anyone knows anything about it and what kinds of students they look for exactly?

I know its focused on low income students that will be involved on campus based on the website. Do they look only at top students with the best SATs (and low income)...or is it focused completely on involvement past/potential for future.

Not a big deal....I just wanted to see if anyone knew because it sounded interesting and a good thing to have at A&M. Don't have any children myself that will be able to apply for this but still great none the less.

I got it, was a good scholarship, however I would say that most of the kids who got it were not "low income", most of them were middle class and bragged about how their parents were going to buy them a car because they got college paid for.

I personally found it a bit insulting because what they categorize as low income is not really getting used to help actual low income people. I dont know if that is a failure of A&M (highly likely as the Honors office at least during my time at A&M was a cluster fck) or a failure of the Terry Foundation itself.

Either way, good luck to her if she gets it. If she lives on campus, her entire college will be paid for and she gets extra consideration for University Scholar and stuff like that.

Oh and dont get me wrong, I am thankful to the Terry Foundation that they funded my studies at A&M. Although I believe I received about 40k$/year in initial scholarships (everything besides the Terry was revoked), it was still nice to know that I for once in my life didnt have to worry about where I was going to live next month or what I was going to eat.

That was the main point, if A&M and the scholarship are looking for actual "in need" people, they are missing their mark. If the "need based" scholarship recipients still have to do some BS program named Excel run by the Honors department, that is also crap. Excel was like most A&M things, some worthless program for middle class whites in some worthless major to have "filler" for their resume, because they dont actually have any skills.

What A&M actually needs is a mentor program by poor people for poor people .. of course that is unlikely to happen, because A&M is a college for upper to middle class whites, by upper to middle class whites. That much hasnt changed and giving out a scholarship to the least wealthy of the middle class whites, doesnt really change the impact of anything.

Well, I could have gotten in anywhere I applied since I am the smartest person in the world so obviously my problem was turning down all the professors who wanted to write me letters describing my awesomeness.

Whatever graduate program you are applying for, let me just tell you that it is not as challenging as the one I ultimately decided on, and I scored far higher on my GRE hungover and without studying than you could do even if you took the Princeton and Kaplan GRE preparation and learned every word in the dictionary.

Hope that helps!

Randy, there is such a mentor program.

Freshman year, 2008, as a Regent Scholarship recipient, it was required to take part in Aggie Access. It was a mentor program that met once a week and everyone in my group was middle class or low income, as well as the mentors. It also provided small core classes (history, polisci, comm, ect) that only included 'community' members.

Thats good that there is a program like that these days, because there wasnt anything like that when I started and I actually really needed it. I didnt know anyone who had went to college before I went and no one in my immediate family had been to college in like 50 years.

Im glad that A&M wised up that not all the kids go there are from white suburbia and understand what they are getting into. As one can readily see from my responses, my interactions with things dealing with scholarships, honors and university scholar stuff wasnt terribly enjoyable during my time at A&M.

Also nnichols .. there is no need to troll me, dont you work for the school or something? Furthermore, there is something wrong with your post, or is Chasing Tail one of your socks?

I would suggest bragging as much as possible on the application. Clearly they do not look for humility.

I'd venture to say it's one of the best scholarships at A&M. The goal is to cover the full cost of college (though plenty still work, esp. after their freshman year). Requirements to keep it are shockingly low (2.5 GPA, attendance at 3 mandatory events a year) Most of the people that get it were very well-rounded in high school- high grades and test scores with heavy involvement in extra curriculars/volunteer work. It's by no means an academic merit scholarship only. I'd say it slants a little bit towards kids coming out of smaller towns (Dallas/Houston kids get it too, just a disproportionate amount live outside those areas as compared to the rest of the student body). 50-75 kids at A&M a year get it, I think if you get invited to interview there is ~50% chance that you'll get the scholarship, unless they've changed. The Terry's and the entire Foundation staff are excellent people.

I know two guys who benefitted from this scholarship, and they are AWESOME. Truly dedicated young men - they have made A&M proud and serve on the Terry interview selection committee.

It is an amazing program, and the kids who get it seem highly motivated to do well. I wish we had a dozen similar programs.

I'm an actual scholar and it's been a huge blessing to me. At A&M it seems like it is weighted a little more toward small town kids. The Foundation is full of some wonderful people, and I couldn't be more thankful of what they have done for me and my family. I think the Foundation looks for people who are involved in High School that will hopefully make an impact on their communities when they graduate.

When I applied for it A&M asked me to do it. I had no idea what it was and wrote the extra essays as a shot in the dark. It was a great decision on my part. I don't know if A&M still does it that way or now anybody can apply. I hope this helps.

My ex was a Terry scholar. It was a pretty sweet deal. Even with all the scholarship money I got (PES, Director's Excellence, etc.), I was still jealous -- it gives a full ride and then some. The mandatory events were just get togethers with all of the Terry scholars from around the state (Mr. Terry sponsors kids from several different Texas schools). The events certainly weren't much of an imposition for her. In addition to the GPA requirement, recipients aren't allow to get married (or have a kid, I believe) until they graduate. I think this is so they stay focused on their studies.

I was blessed to be a recipient of the Terry scholarship and I wish your neighbor the best of luck because that scholarship is a blessing!
