How long do you want to ignore this user?
I know that the nursing program here at A&M has only been around for a few years. I was wondering how competitive it was to get in and what the minimum GPR is etc....

it's only been around a year and a half. I'm in the inaugural class.

it's extremely competitive. this past spring, we had over 300 applicants for 44 spots. next year, they MIGHT up the number to 66 spots, but that's still up in the air. I don't see a minimum GPR requirement, but it is also competitive. a sub-3.0 GPA will not cut it.

if you have any more questions, just post on this thread and I'll check it regularly.

I want to point out for clarity purposes that the Nursing school is not part of Texas A&M University. It is part of the Texas A&M Health Science Center, which is a system school. This confuses many people. For information on admissions check out the link, that blueag09 supplied.

uh, yea. I have several classmates that were pretty upset when they joined the program at the beginning of their junior year, and were told that they would NOT be getting Aggie rings and diplomas.

the HSC is a separate university within the A&M System, similar to Commerce and Corpus.

does anyone know the average GPR of someone accepted? Also, a Blinn student can take all the prereq courses there and transfer correct?

Take your pre-reqs at Blinn and apply to both the ADN program at Blinn and to TAMUHSC. If you don't get into HSC , but are accepted at Blinn, do that and then get your BSN later.

to get the average GPR, you *might* be able to get that information from the admissions lady, Kathryn Cochran. her info is in the above link.

as far as applying to Blinn and TAMHSC, don't limit yourself to B/CS. apply EVERYWHERE. most people don't get into nursing school on the first try (especially Blinn, one of the most competitive programs in the state). I didn't get in on my first try either. apply everywhere you can. I applied to UT, TAMHSC, TAMU-Corpus, TWU, and a few other places.

If you dont get in on the first try, then what? Once you have all your prereqs done what else is there to do?

apply again the next year, keep working in the meantime, maybe strengthen the application a little bit. my application was strengthened by the fact that before nursing school, I worked in the ER full-time as a tech.

Cheer, I'm just curious, out of your 44, how many of your original class are still on track to graduate in May?
Cheer

well, half of the 44 are accelerated students, set to graduate in December. of them, 20 are set to graduate in December. the other half, the generic students, have 20 set to graduate.

we've had 4 dropouts. 3 I saw coming, one was unexpected.

I was just wondering because we're down to 77 including people who dropped back from accelerated. (We started with about 100).

yea, I'm actually surprised we had so many stay. the accelerated folks only have one semester left, so I think they're in for good. there is one more generic person I'm worried about, because she just found out she's pregnant and due in March. horrible timing, I kinda feel bad for her.

That happened to a classmate of mine last semester (due in June w/ twins but didn't make it past the middle of April). She'll be graduating a semester behind us--she had to withdraw from OB and the professors worked with her on finals and the like.

I graduated in August with a Kinesiology degree in Applied Exercise Physiology. I havent had any luck on finding a job and recently decided that I wanted to go to nursing school.

I plan on applying to UTHSC-SA, UTHSC-Houston, TAMUHSC, TWU, TAMU-CC, UTMB Galveston and a few others.

I'm taking the rest of the pre-reqs in the spring at a community college-- micro, lifespan-growth & development and sociology.

A&M also requires ethics and speech. Do I need to take these or can they be subsituted with other courses I have taken? If I absolutely need to, I can take these also.

I also noticed on some school sites that there is a HESI A2 exam that has to be taken. Do you have any recommendations on how to study for this test? I plan on taking it within the next few weeks so I can apply for Fall admission.

thanks in advance.

I am beginning the HSC Accelerated program in January. If you're looking at the generic program instead, it's a little different, but you can find the information on the nursing website also.

You can go here:
http://nursing.tamhsc.edu/accelerated-prerequisite-table.pdf

It tells you what types of things they will sub for the prereqs. Also make sure you have satisfied the HSC core curriculum requirements found here:
http://nursing.tamhsc.edu/undergrad-core-curriculum.pdf

If you have any doubts, Kathryn Cochran will talk w/ you about it.

I made a 96% on the HESI exam...I used the study guide overnight (it was pretty worthless in my opinion) and then studied my final exam from Anatomy and Physiology. The math is junior high level (ratios, conversions, multiplying/dividing fractions, temperature conversions, weight conversions etc). Reading comprehension was pretty easy too. You might benefit by studying the vocab in the study guide if you have no medical background. The A&P was actually the toughest part, but again the study guide was worthless there--use your stuff from your undergrad to study that part.

Have you taken patho yet? Or are you planning to take it this summer?

For A&M Corpus, I transferred my core curriculum from A&M and didn't have to take economics or the philosophy (ethics I think) since they just counted the other degree.

http://conhs.tamucc.edu/undergraduate/generic.html might help you out for A&M-CC. Your best bet about substitution though is to call the advisers. Are you looking to do accelerated or generic? If you have any questions about the Corpus program, let me know and I'll be happy to answer anything I can.

Also, I remember taking the entrance Hesi the second day of class (so even if the school doesn't list it you might be taking it). We didn't know so we didn't study (which might have been the idea) but it wasn't bad. Failed the anatomy part, but I think I passed everything else.

they've already told you most of the info you need. I got nothing. I didn't have to take the HESI entrance exam, but I did take the NET. it was easier than the SAT.
