It is one thing to be in the building and studying, but it is another thing when you are working and you have 3 kids, listening to their laptops, trying to "study" or you want to eat lunch in the lobby, but you have 2 people who feel that the chairs are "beds". Do I come to your PoB and hang out there, making loud noises and generally getting in the way? Do I roam around and act annoying to you? I am not on the 1st floor, I am on the 5th floor. Also, when things start "missing", the building gets in lockdown mode, meaning I have to swip my card everytime I get into the elevator. Since I generally work between 2 labs on 2 different floors, gets really annoying real quick.
Unless you work at a bar, people don't hang out where you work. Trust me, this is not a "one time event" or a "small percentage". Plus, if they were to act like they cared how the place looked, we might overlook the fact they aren't supposed to be here (talk to the building super, he will tell you). But when they destroy chairs, tables, scratch the floors, make up the pillars and walls, we (the grad students) start getting annoyed. We want our building to be nice, not have it turn into Zachry.
Prior, our building, past the 2nd floor, is NOT public. We have to have this building on lockdown due to the chemicals we have inside, thanks to 9/11, the FBI, ATF, Oklahoma city, etc. I realize that not all the kids are "turrists", but we have to have security in place for a reason. Also, the 5th floor is where were have bio research, so if you want to catch what we work with (which is the virulent E. coli (remember the spinach bit, yea, the same one),) then by all means come up.
