My cousin is planning on transfering here in the Fall and these are the 4 majors that he is pretty much deciding between. We've seen the Ag Econ/Econ debate hammered to death on here....But how do majors like Comm and Agribusiness compare? These are all majors that the advisor here at A&M reccomended to him, and I really don't know enough about any of them to tell him one way or the other. He wanted to do business, but he has a lot of hours and doesn't have the 3.8 or whatever you need to transfer directly into Mays so it's down to these..

Also....Is it true that Liberal Arts majors now have to take 4 semesters of a foreign language? I know it wasn't that way a few years ago..

I don't know anything about COMM, but as for Agribusiness, it is much like agecon. A lot of the difference is that agribusiness takes a lot more business classes. These include Acct, mgmt, finc, info. I took a few of these classes as my electives in agec.

I would explore http://agecon.tamu.edu/undergraduate

If you go to prospective students you can see a typical degree outline for both agec and agbu.

The COMM department is great here and has the most job opportunities. ECON probably has the 2nd most job opportunities.

If he wants to be in Ag at all, tell him to go Ag Business. You are both in Mays and the Ag school. Heres the kicker though.. if he doesnt like it, he can EASILY transfer to Ag Econ because all of the prerequisites are higher. If he were to start in AgEcon, transferring to AgBusiness would not be possible unless he wanted to retake some classes.

For example..
Agecon majors take ACCT 209/210
AgBus majors take ACCT 229/ 230

If he were to start in AGEC and trandfer to AGBU, he would end up taking 4 accounting classes. I dont know if that makes sense, but thats why a lot of people choose Ag Business.

I will tell you that the advisors in our program are top notch, the professors for the most part are well spoken, nice, and willing to help at any cost, and the department as a whole does a real good job of taking care of its students.

Oh ya, and Charlie Murphy is in idiot [/obligatory post]

Also, See what he is interested in. Agec has a few degree options to take. Finance and real estate, Food marketing systems, Rural Entrepreneurship, and Policy and Economic Analysis (that option I picked). Its nice to have different option within a degree to get a feel for what you want to do.

Ya, I picked finance and real estate.

SayHeyKid,

You do realize that the COMM department at A&M is the highest rated liberal arts department. Several of the specific types of COMM study at A&M are #1 in the nation, such as health communication (that's the only one that I remember). This is coming from someone who isn't a student in the COMM department.

Also, COMM majors are the most requested majors for the companies at the liberal arts career fair.

ECON is the 2nd most requested in liberal arts career fair.

Also, there are many opportunities for ECON majors at the Mays business career fair, even more than MGMT and MKTG majors.

As an econ major I didn't even bother with the Liberal Arts career fair. Only went to the Business school's.

At the PHD level, not undergrad.

i would venture to say that acquiring a job with an agribusiness degree would be much easier than if a communications or economics degree was held.

there are countless opportunities for AGBU and the agecon undergrad office is probably the most helpful and caring office on campus.

Sayheykid - I don't think it is supposed to be funny. After all, there are tons of different fast food dining establishments.

Thanks for all the responses....I was talking to him again today, and have another question.

He wants to get into Mays more than any of the majors I listed, but he has a lot of hours since he is in his 4th semester of college. Apparantly you need a 3.8 or so to transfer straight into Mays, and he has a 3.5 or maybe slightly higher. I don't think Mays takes anyone that lists Business as their 2nd choice, so the question is....Could he list it first, hoping to somehow get in, and list one of the Ag or Liberal Arts majors second without decreasing his chances to get in all that much? In other words....Does it really matter if the 4 majors I listed in the topic are listed first or second on the application? His only shot at getting into Mays is transfering right in, because he'll have too many hours to transfer to A&M as a different major, take 30 at A&M with a 3.2 and THEN transfer into Mays. What would be the best route here?

I just transfered in this semester to AgCOMM. Lib Arts doesn't like you listing them second. But Ag doesn't care. That may not be true of EVERY Ag major. But I know it is for AgComm.

Well I would at least assume that a 3.5+ would all but guarantee him into any of the 4 majors I listed....He just doesn't want to list one second behind Mays (which is a longshot) and have his admission to A&M be less of a sure thing that it would be if he listed one of those 4 first.
mazag08

A 3.5 will get him into Agribusiness, from which he will be in both chools, Mays and College of Ag. That is what I would recommend, but I am kinda biased because I absolutely love our department.
TexasAggie008
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Well would listing that as his 2nd choice behind Business hurt his chances of getting in though, assuming he doesn't get into Mays?

I think that Agribusiness is focused in the college of Ag. I know that when declaring your major for upper level (after sophmore year) Agribusiness is not an option.

So I think it would be just fine listing Agribusiness behind Mays. I would email an advisor for Agribusiness first though.

I was an AGEC major and transferred into ECON. I think choosing between the two really depends on a persons personality, preferences, and what they plan on doing when they graduate. Personally I am from Dallas and grew up a "city-boy" and Agec
105 scared me out of the major.
I love the ECON department, and it is currently going through a major overhaul by a new department head. If interested in business, be an ECON major and Business minor (MAYS), and also get the Business Economics Certificate (BEC). Getting the BEC introduces students to intermediate Econometric Analysis through a forecasting class. Also, the BEC will probably help a student decide on whether or not an MS in ECON is for them.
Also, I think the BA requires the foreign language, but the BS does not.

FYI: If you list Ag-Business behind Business and get rejected by Mays, you automatically get rejected by Ag-Business too. I thought about doing that until I read into it further. Make sure you don't do that!

you can hate on COMM, but I am graduating in May and got myself a mighty fine job using my degree making well over the average salary for our department. I loved it and it obviously worked out for me!

Congrats but I'm afraid that you are the exception rather than the rule.

I agree. ECON is not as specialized as accounting so there's not quite as many opportunities, but ECON will still get your foot in the door. It's a great major if you're going to go to grad school, law school, or get a MBA.

I disagree. Just about every top 100 university in America has some sort of economics program. It's a very well-known major. Agribusiness is a very good major, but I'm afraid that companies with little experience with A&M will see it as an agriculture degree rather than a business degree, even though it's both. I think it would be best to say that you can get the same opportunities as an agribusiness major that you can with the ECON major in most situations.
