I am deeply saddened to see the article on his passing. John Hogg was a man of great integrity, knowledge, and excellence. He was my undergraduate advisor, and was one of the great assets of the TAMU chemistry department. At age 59, this news seems so premature, and I will miss being able to stop by the department and shoot the bull with him.
There are so many things that he did for A&M that I don't have time to write. I will relate just one. One Sunday afternoon late in my undergraduate career, he took the time to call me at home to verify that I had registered for all the credits I needed to graduate on time. How many men spend Sunday afternoon poring over transcripts to make sure that every 20 year old signed up for the right classes?
In a time when big budget departments focus on what brings in the $$$ (research), Dr. Hogg truly cared about mentoring and teaching undergrads. I have a Ph.D., but Dr. Hogg didn't care if you were pre-med, a future teacher, a future industry technician, or even if you wanted to get out of chemistry entirely. He cared for everybody equally. He wanted us to each find personal fulfillment, like he had so obviously achieved in a job that was made both by him and for him.
Rest in Peace.
