Yeah, well decades of group projects in school have taught intervening generations that a bunch of people can get by leaching off the hard work of those who want to overachieve. It was never about teaching teamwork...
Even if that were the intention, other activities -- fine arts, sports, etc. -- are FAR better to teach those things than class work where INDIVIDUAL grades are handed out.
Why are class ranks so important if a great deal of graded school work was group-based? A substantial portion of those ranks HAD to have been the result of the work of others. You're right -- the whole thing is inconsistent at best and never about teaching what they said it was about.
Both of you make good points.
We often hear that capitalism has its flaws. The only major flaw I can think of is a monopoly that manipulates the market barring others from entry. If you think about it, it's not so much that capitalism is flawed, but the general population (society) eats away at it expecting the producers to provide for all. I think it was Pat Buchanan who said we needed more people out of the wagon and more people pulling the wagon.
There was a time in this country where you either produced or you didn't eat. Those who couldn't produce were taken care of by family or local charity.
