The history of Columbus day is fascinating - and those who have beef with colonialism should take a few minutes to understand what the day actually is (but they never will). It all started because of a mass arrest of Italians in New Orleans in the 1890's that ended up having people march on the jail and lynch 11 of them. (no way! it wasn't only blacks who were oppressed and lynched?!?)
Long story short, they chose Columbus to rally behind because he was Italian and a fundamental part of American history (meaning that Italians also played a key role in the formation of the United States). At the time, Columbus was the logical choice. But now, we love to judge the past with a modern lens...
Even more fun and political: In 2021, Indigenous People's Day was federally recognized by Biden through official proclamation. Trump did not continue the practice. Some states and tribal nations also recognize this. No legislation has been able to survive congress either.
I think it's pretty clear though that the Italians were not the best of us…
In 1776 there were about four Italians in the entire hemisphere, and one of them was just sending letters to Jefferson trying to sell him wine.
You guys didn't show up until the country was already built, spent forty years running bootleg liquor and fighting each other in the street and pouring concrete over people who didn't pay up.
This place was up and running for 120 years before you guys even started showing up.
I love pasta and pizza too, bro, but calm down ;-)
